Mode Shifter & Shaft Assembly
Genuine Ge part
By: Ge
Part Number: WH38X10017

The Mode Shifter & Shaft Assembly is an OEM replacement part for GE washing machines. It is a mechanical component located inside the washer tub that allows for shifting between agitation, spin, and other cycles. The mode shifter and shaft assembly receive input from the control system to precisely change the operational mode at designated points in the cycle.

Causes of a bad mode shifter & shaft assembly include worn out or damaged internal gears, stripped or broken shafts, or a loss of integrity in components that restrict smooth shifting between modes.

Symptoms of a bad mode shifter & shaft assembly include:

  • Inability to start or change wash cycles
  • The washer getting stuck in one mode of operation
  • Grinding noises and vibrations during cycle shifts
  • Premature ending of cycles

This GE OEM replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Washer would not spin nor adgitate   Jeff A. • Stow , OH • June 28, 2015

Motor control board was flashing 4 times, indicating that the mode shifter had an error. I disconnected the mode shifter's wire from the controller and measured the resistance between the 2 leads with an ohmmeter. Since the reading was infinite, that meant that the mode shifter coil or in-line thermal sensor was electrically open, i.e. bad. As this fix is near a complete tear-down of the washing machine, here are a few tips I discovered. 1) the hub nut is difficult to remove and you need a... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You I thought the tub bearing was bad it was the mode shifter bearing that was the problem   Roger M. • Fryeburg , ME • August 22, 2020

I looked up a YouTube video first to know how to take my washing machine apart. It was an Appliance Parts Pros Video. Very helpful! I replaced the mode shifter, water pump, washers, agitator spline, hub nut, tub bearing, tub seal and drive belt. The hub nut DID NOT want to come off. I cut it off with my Dremel and chipped out the beveled segment with a heavy duty screw driver and 3# hammer. Had to be very careful to not damage the hub assembly. Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Worn out shock springs allowing the drive shaft to rub the bottom of the cabinet with a full load   Richard C. • Monmouth , IL • February 27, 2015

I shopped around a bit - found one retailer that only had 1 shock in stock, another that only stocked the front shocks, etc. There is definitely a difference in the springs between the green colored and white colored shocks! I've torn this washer down before, so I'm fairly familiar with how it's put together. I've seen some of the You-tube videos on replacing this item, and some of the videos show far more disassembly than is required. I only removed the front, top, and controls, and... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Badly rusted lid and top cover: ge model s5100d0ww   George W. • Louisville , KY • September 30, 2014

Removing and Replacing (R&R) the parts took about 15 minutes. Getting the correct parts took several weeks. It was a severe struggle. Many of you will experience problems trying to get the correct "Lid" for similar GE washing machine models. AppliancePartsPros.com was great: Right price, Arrived quickly in good condition. I got the wrong part. It was not the fault of AppliancePartsPros.com, though. To make a long story short, GE has disseminated incorrect data in parts lists and it... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Clunking and grinding from the drive   Scott R. • Onondaga , MI • August 14, 2015

Replaced the shaft & mode shifter assembly. Also replaced the pulley as it had taken some damage from the wobbling clutch dog. And replaced the tub seal since it's normally inaccessible with the shaft in place. This is an advanced repair that took a lot of time. Removing the tub nut took a 1 11/16" socket and a 700 ft-lb impact wrench and I had to hammer on the nut for several minutes to break it free of the tub. Disassembly of the washer is complete, and requires a lot of space for... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Detached agitator (infusor) on ge model whre5550k2ww   Tobe B. • Northfield , MN • January 08, 2017

The screw that holds the agitator in place appeared to have worn and rusty threads. I tried to replace it with a standard hardware store 1/4-20 hex head screw but that wouldn't grip. I had thoughts of needing to tap the hole, but eventually bought the specified screw, which is a specialist. It has tapered threads, a shoulder, rubber bushings, an attached washer and a hex head. I spent a lot of time trying other things but when the real part arrived it only took a few minutes to set it in place. ... Read more
