Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You My pump belt broke   Steven H. • Harleysville , PA • June 15, 2015

This was a very easy fix. Two screws to get the front off of the washer. Removed one side of the tensioner spring. Loosened two screws for the motor and two screws for the pump. I decided to replace the agitate belt even though it wasn't broken.. So, I removed that belt from the pulleys and the removed the broken belt. then just reversed the process to install the belts. it toke me less than 30 minutes and my washer was back in service. Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You The ice bucket housing had disintegrated and the motor twisted off   Lloyd W. • Streamwood , IL • January 08, 2026

I pulled out the old housing and unplugged the motor. It pretty much came out in pieces. Remove the plastic from the motor, then had to take a pair of vice grips to hold the spindle in place to remove the auger. Remove what was still attached to the old Housing. Cleaned everything up and put the whole unit back together. The motor looked like it was somewhat cooked but still worked, so I ordered a new motor and auger to replace it. This was some repair! My SG1000 stackable is over 30 years old and was purchased second hand. I've replaced many parts in the dryer section, but besides a water inlet, this was my first repair to the washer. All of a sudden it started making a terrible noise and was not agitating the clothes. The spin cycle worked fine. I first replaced the two belts on the bottom, but when I removed the old ones I realized they did not look terribly worn and weren't the cause. Many stories on here indicated... Read more

Remove the front panel, lay the washer on its back, rotate the transmission assembly so the cover is up. Unbolt and remove the cover, put a pan under the transmission and rotate it to drain the oil. Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Maytag clothes washer would not spin or drain   Ben M. • Wallingford , CT • September 29, 2018

The washer was on, and I heard a faint humming sound in the laundry room. I went in and opened the washer and it was full of soapy water in the middle of its cycle and was not agitating. I also smelled a faint burning smell. At this point I figured the problem was a bad motor, as the washer is more than 20 years old. I have fixed it twice before, because the first time, the repairman said I should keep this washer going as long as possible. It was made to last with a metal drum, unlike newer... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You My maytag washing machine would't drain the water on either regular or permanent press cycle   Alex L. • Avon , CT • November 17, 2014

The gentle cycle did work, so I figured that the cycle controller was the problem. I searched on line with the make and model # for parts and found the item with a picture that looked just like the part in my machine, so I bought it, and it came right away. Installation was simple, the hardest part was figuring out I had to pry off the cover at the center of the dial to remove the clip that held the dial onto the pin. Found the wonderful parts diagrams you most generously share online and a couple of YouTube videos . I determined it should be repairable. In my cast the agitator shaft was frozen (rusted) in place. I was very fortunate to have been able to eventually remove it with the use of a lot of BP penetrating oil and heat. Long and short the replacement parts fit perfectly and the washer is running like new. Special thanks to the online support make my repair possible. Read more
