This knob attaches to the timer shaft on the washer control panel, allowing you to select wash cycle settings. It typically pushes or clips onto the timer stem. Replace this knob if it is cracked, the D-shaped shaft connection is worn out, or it spins freely without engaging the timer.

Fixing the problem was quite simple. First, I removed the lid assembly (thanks to the diagrams supplied by AppliancePartsPros.com!). Getting the back two screws out was very difficult because I couldn't see them from the front and I could not move the unit out of the enclosed space. Weekend laundry became very noisy, our 1987 Whirlpool washer began doing a dance across the floor and the drum was banging into the inner cabinet.
