Mode Shifter & Shaft Assembly
Genuine Ge part
By: Ge
Part Number: WH38X10017

The Mode Shifter & Shaft Assembly is an OEM replacement part for GE washing machines. It is a mechanical component located inside the washer tub that allows for shifting between agitation, spin, and other cycles. The mode shifter and shaft assembly receive input from the control system to precisely change the operational mode at designated points in the cycle.

Causes of a bad mode shifter & shaft assembly include worn out or damaged internal gears, stripped or broken shafts, or a loss of integrity in components that restrict smooth shifting between modes.

Symptoms of a bad mode shifter & shaft assembly include:

  • Inability to start or change wash cycles
  • The washer getting stuck in one mode of operation
  • Grinding noises and vibrations during cycle shifts
  • Premature ending of cycles

This GE OEM replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Washer would not spin nor adgitate   Jeff A. • Stow , OH • June 28, 2015

Motor control board was flashing 4 times, indicating that the mode shifter had an error. I disconnected the mode shifter's wire from the controller and measured the resistance between the 2 leads with an ohmmeter. Since the reading was infinite, that meant that the mode shifter coil or in-line thermal sensor was electrically open, i.e. bad. As this fix is near a complete tear-down of the washing machine, here are a few tips I discovered. 1) the hub nut is difficult to remove and you need a... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Whirlpool direct driver washer leak caused by basket drive shaft wear   Philip L. • Columbia , MD • November 15, 2019

In reality, this turned into a full-on rebuild project - with several parts orders, not just a simple repair. But I have to give credit: The parts listings with pictures on the AppliancePartsPros web site were really useful in figuring out what was going on inside the machine, and what parts I would need. Also: The repair videos were critical for me to be able to ensure I was reassembling everything correctly. Shout out to Simon, who was featured in several of the repair videos. His "gorgeous... Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Ge washer was very loud during spin cycle   Vincent B. • Merrick , NY • January 31, 2016

After researching the problem on this site, I realized that the most likely cause was a bad bearing contained in the shaft & tube assembly. Essentially, the tub seal failed & allowed water to travel down the shaft & into the housing containing the bearing. I confirmed this by pulling the front cover off of the unit & noticed some brown water pooled directly under the shaft & tube assembly. I followed the disassembly instructions on this site & it wasn't too bad but did take some time as pretty... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You GE front loader dryer making loud noise and clothes were getting caught and twisted inside!   Victoria M. • Falmouth , ME • January 23, 2018

Our GE front loader dryer is approximately 10 years old. It started making a loud noise. Before we sank another $600 for a new dryer, I decided to go online to search Youtube videos to try to find out if anyone else had the same problem. I found that a lot of dryers had drum support bearings that wore out and needed to be replaced and a lot of dryers were also having clothes caught up in them. I then found an Appliance Parts Pro video on how to fix this problem and found out what parts... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You No spin every thing else worked made high speed ticking noise   Anthony D. • Follansbee , WV • May 12, 2015

First I looked at the many you tube vids, and there are many. appliance parts pros pretty much shows you how to deal with the parts. I changed the brake shoes and the clutch assembly which also comes with the driver cam. I also changed the metal brake operating cam. I think that brake lockup or improper brake release was the problem that broke the plastic cam driver. This was the broken plastic part making all the ticking noise. I first changed the coupling on the motor but that wasn't bad. in... Read more

Ordered the parts from AppliancePartsPros - super fast shipping, and even though I opted for regular shipping all of my parts arrived the very next day, including the big and bulky inner basket. Disassembly went smoothly, simply following the directions in the AppliancePartsPros video. The only problem I had was that the inner basket simply would NOT come of the drive block no matter what I did. Struggled for a few hours trying to take it off. The Tub Assembly is an OEM component for LG clothes dryers. As the central component housing both the inner and outer drums, the tub assembly is essential for safely drying wet laundry loads. It rotates the drums to circulate air and remove moisture from clothes during cycles.

Symptoms of an issue with the tub assembly dryer are:

  • Inefficient or slow drying times
  • Abnormal noises or vibrations during cycles
  • Restricted or lack of drum rotation
  • Cracks, leaks, or physical damage visible on drums

This OEM LG part is also compatible with Sears/Kenmore.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Lg dryer drum failure   Robert C. • Sandy , OR • February 07, 2015

I watched the video posted by Jerrod Sessler on yellow van handyman.com. Then I had to unstack the dryer from the washer, remove all covers, disconnect all hose connections, shock mounts and springs and remove the tub assembly. Tore entire machine down to get to wash drum. Found it had a broken "spider" which is common with most front load machines. The drum is stainless steel but the spider is cast aluminum and it does not do well when exposed to laundry soap. It was pretty much disintegrated as a matter of fact.
