My son told me that almost all the microwave ovens that came into the repair center he worked at, 15 years ago, had a defective magnetron. I ordered a magnetron, and sat back until one shipped. This is a micro switch that detects whether the microwave door is properly closed and latched. It is part of the safety interlock system that prevents the microwave from operating with the door open. Replace this switch if the microwave does not start when the door is shut, runs with the door open, blows a fuse when the door closes, or stops mid-cycle intermittently.
Knowing the odds of 2 failures occurring at the same exact time was unusually high, I just searched your site for what other broken items might affect these two failures. LG Help-line said probably a failed magnetron, but since out of warranty,referred me to an authorized LG repair service. They wanted $79.95 service call to come out & diagnose problem. I have a multimeter so I was able to check the fuse per website recommendations and it was blown. However, the capacitor on the microwave was also original so I elected to replace the capacitor, fuse, and the ground protect diode. The repair was very simple (making sure the capacitor was discharged before replacing) and the microwave is now up and running again. I googled the make and model, and found the part on AppliancePartsPros.com. The underside of the oven has a metal grille with numerous openings of various shapes and sizes. There is a rectangle that is punched into this grille, just below the motor. I pried between the vent holes to snap the connections near the perimeter on the punched rectangle.
