Whirlpool Overload
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WP2217223

The Overload is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It is an important component of the refrigerator's compressor system, providing protection against electrical overload.

The overload helps safeguard the compressor from excessive electrical currents, preventing potential damage and ensuring the longevity of the refrigerator. It acts as a safety measure by interrupting the power supply to the compressor when necessary.

Causes of a faulty overload can include power surges, excessive heat, or electrical component failure. These factors can lead to the overload not properly regulating the electrical flow, resulting in compressor issues or the refrigerator not cooling effectively.

Symptoms of a bad overload may include:

  • The refrigerator not cooling or maintaining the desired temperature
  • Unusual noises coming from the compressor
  • The compressor not running at all

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

  • Opens/closes the heating circuit at its set temperature to regulate heat output.
  • Functions as an upper-limit/safety thermostat to help prevent overheating.
  • Common symptoms of failure: no heat, intermittent heating, or continuous heating despite controls.
  • Used where an upper-temperature cutoff is required to maintain safe operation.
What's included: One upper SPST thermostat. Install notes:
  • Disconnect power to the appliance before servicing to avoid shock or injury.
  • Compare wiring and mounting orientation to the original part before removal.
  • Confirm failure with a multimeter (continuity check) before replacing the thermostat.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Blown thermostat from self cleaning whirlpool double oven   Kevin B. • Waldorf , MD • January 11, 2015

I was devastated to hear my wife tell me our Whirlpool double oven was dead after she used the self clean mode. After my research, I found this problem to be more common than expected. I kept seeing reference made to Appliance Parts Pros during my research. I went to the website and found the parts I didnt think anyone had. APP was quick, the price was excellent and when I called their staff I found them to be friendly, knowledgeable and thorough! They had my parts to me in no time and I fixed... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Humming sound and burnt smell   Antonio F. • Miami , FL • June 08, 2018

I measured the resistance between the two connectors on the magnetron: should be close to zero ohms and it was. I measured between the same connectors and the metal case: should be mega ohms, it was 15k ohms. That is a bad, partly shorted unit. I also checked the resistance of the thermal cut off, which should be zero but was 10 ohms so I replaced. The HV diode is checked with a 9 V battery (YouTube checking microwave HV diode) and it too was bad. Make sure to take pictures as you disassemble... Read more

What's included: 1 fixed thermostat (60C, SPST) Install notes:
  • Disconnect power at the breaker before servicing
  • Access the thermostat per your model; it is typically mounted to a plenum or bracket near the oven cavity
  • Move wires one at a time and mount the new thermostat flat against the surface for accurate sensing
  • Restore power and verify the fan cycles during operation

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Oven had a burnt out hidden bake element and was not heating properly   Christopher A. • Auburn , AL • April 23, 2017

Following the instructions that I received through the helpful research of the APP staff, I disconnected the power, disassembled the back of the oven, and accessed the hidden element. This involved bending parts of the sheet metal and cutting the insulation, so I was very apprehensive about doing this. Once I exposed the compartment that contains the element, I had difficulty extracting the old part and was really nervous about pulling hard to extract it - until I saw the damaged element. It... Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Our son tried to do us a favor by using the selfclean feature on our oven while we were out of town this caused one or more internal fuses to blow   Daniel A. • Magnolia , TX • May 13, 2017

Not sure which fuse might be bad, I ordered all three. The oven is almost twenty years old, so I figured it couldn't hurt to replace them all. The breakers marked oven were tripped, so we figured everything was off. Wrong! The 220 and the 120 are separate breakers. We found this out the old fashioned way, we got shocked. Anyway, the fix is pretty simple. Take off decorative trim. Only one screw on each side holds it on. Remove four screws securing oven to cabinet, and slide oven out. Our oven... Read more
