It appeared that there were two problems: One was that over the past year, some cycles no longer worked, and second, eventually there was no response from the touchpad at all when attempting to start the machine.
The replacement of both the electronic control board and the touchpad console appears to have fixed all the problems. Both were accessible by removing the access screws in the door. Once the touchpad has been removed with the Torx screws (easily accessible by just opening the door), you have access to the control module.
The repair was relatively expensive (over $300) but less than half the price of a new dishwasher.
