How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6037857 / W10882923 Refrigerator Ice Maker Assembly

Hard to find instructions on how to get the old one out (thanks Youtube!). It was a royal pain to find all the hidden latches and release tabs on this refrig. I have changed ice makers before, but nothing compared to this french-door Whirlpool. AppliancePartsPros were great on quick shipping and well packed. Ordered it at 4pm on Friday, had it Saturday. 

The dual inlet valve was the problem. The hardest part of the repair was moving the refrigerator so we could unplug it. The whole job took about 25 minutes and that includes the time we spent emptying and reorganizing the shelves. I love AppliancePartsPros.com. We only used one screwdriver and that was only used to open the back panel of the refrigerator. 

I really hate intermittent problems with appliances. In this case our year and a half year old Maytag french door refrigerator would quit making ice. After reading as much as I could on line, I removed the icemaker (no small feat) and it would work for a couple weeks when I put it back. Water pressure and solenoids worked fine. In opening the motor module, which mechanically controlled most of the complicated process, I found that the motor, when bypassed, ran fine. Thermo relay closed when cold, etc. When it finally quit for good, I discovered that the micro switch that activated the water solenoid was bad. As the switch was held in place by melted plastic posts, it couldn't be replaced. I bought the entire module, which was an exact replacement (evidently for Whirlpool and others). I replaced the old module and it has been making ice reliably for several days now. I worked on this issue for several weeks, off and on, and learned far more than I cared to about icemakers. 

Replaced the Ice Maker with the part from AppliancePartsPros.com. Shipping was extremely fast... received it in less than 24 hrs standard shipping. The part was the correct part in manufacture's packaging. Found an excellent repair video at Repairclinic.com... Installed it myself in 30 minutes... working perfectly. 

Watched video on how to remove enclosed ice maker found out motor module was burn out on contact for one of the timers. Went to sears part was 140.00 and another part store would take 2 to 3 weeks to get part 103.00. Looked on appliance parts pros part was 64.00 ordered part on tuesday had part on thursday.Removed old part socket and screwdriver put new one backed on then waited for it to go through it cycle about 2 hours before it made ice no problem. 

Had ice frozen in mold but would not dump it out. Found good set of test procedures on the web. NO ohm reading on the Heater (L & H). Ordered new ICE Maker and it arrived in 2 days. Tested ohm reading on new unit - 63 ohms - GREAT. Installed in 10 minutes... Wasn't long before we heard the cubes falling into the bucket. Got the right part at a great price. Saved a bundle doing it myself. Always confident ordering from AppliancePartsPros 

Using the videos I fiollowed the ohm testing for my model. Ordered the part based on the test results and walla, ice galore! ! Nice website, fast shipping, good price. Doesn't get any better!!! 

I replaced the icemaker and that was enough. I bought both parts just in case it was the valve and not the icemaker. I will be returning the valve as I didn't need it. 

I managed to get a tech sheet for my Maytag fridge to assist with troubleshooting and field stripped the entire ice maker assembly since no ice could mean a handful of issues from the ice maker as well as other parts with the fridge if the ice maker was OK. So I determine the culprit and I had the option to actually purchase the module itself from APP since they had practically the entire parts manual list in-stock for my for my model and are the only website and/or company to offer such variety of parts let alone just the ice maker I ordered. Economically it was cheaper to just purchase the whole ice maker than just the module but as I mentioned, at least the option was there if I really wanted to just get the module. Due to the complexity of the ice making process for my fridge the troubleshooting took much longer than the repair. No joke, the tech sheet listed about 10 possible troubles from parts failures to equal no ice but once it was narrowed down the repair literally took about 10 minutes of just casual effort, The real payoff was the next day when my ice bin was completely full again after running a handful of cycles to top off the bin.With summer approaching... Very pleased! 

The repair for the damaged electrical circuit within the motor module was a full replacement of the motor module. The motor module contains the turning mechanism for the ice maker to remove the ice. It also contains the thermostat and the electrical circuit and controls to heat the bottom of the ice tray to loosen the ice to be removed by the turning mechanism, to call for the ice to be removed and to send a signal to the water valve to open. This is an integral component of the ice maker and without it nothing will work. The repair was simple once you familiarize yourself with the unit.
