How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP4023880 / 206638 Siphon Break

I decided to order the siphon break kit (siphon break, washer and clamp included), a new hose, and clamp (for the bottom hose connection) as the hose was original and well over 15 years old. I probably could have used the old clamp, but decided to get a new one in case there were problems with the old during removal. The video provided by A.P.P was helpful in giving confidence this was a task that could be done by myself. As was shown in the video, the hose connection to the siphon break had a band of metal for the clamp, which had to be cut off. This also influenced my decision to purchase a new hose. Having access to the front and rear of the washer was probably the most annoying part of the task as washers are often in place with the back to a wall between other obstacles. Note that there will likely be water spillage when the hose is removed at the bottom connection. My washer is now back in service. 

Ordered the part from appliance parts pros on Thursday and the part arrived on Friday the next day. I could not believe it got there so quickly. I simply compared the part and saw that it was a direct fit and replaced it. No more leak.

After a bit of troubleshooting noticed that the siphon break was leaking. Found the part on this site and ordered. The part arrived in 24 hours (WOW!). Two hose clamps, four screws later, no more leak. 

I located the leak coming from the discharge hose anti siphon valve, ordered the part on Sunday. The OEM part arrived on Wednesday and I spent a little over half an hour Friday evening replacing it. No more leak. A repairman would have cost about $150 including the part. I was able to get it done for less than $35 plus a little time and effort. 

The leak turned out to be caused by two different things. My initial evaluation showed the drain pump was leaking water from around the pulley shaft. I ordered/replaced the drain pump first as I thought that was the problem. The new drain pump was much quieter, but I noticed there was still a small amount of water dripping onto the floor during drain cycle. Closer examination showed water running down the back side of drain hose from the siphon break. This leak was not visible when looking at the drain pump and hose from front of washing machine. I had to open the top of washing machine and look in from above. I ordered/installed a new siphon break and that has now fully stopped the water leak. 

Looked at where leak was, ordered part, got part when it came. I put new parts on, washer fixed. Very satisfied with your company, not the first time I have used your service. 

I am a single, elderly female, so I had a neighbor do this repair. Initially, after removing the front panel of the washer, he quickly diagnosed the problem I then ordered the part, which arrived, much to my surprise and great pleasure, within a couple of days. First ordered mounting stem kit and tub bearing kit. Thanks to the video that repair went quite well. But it didn’t fix the leak. Figured out the part we needed the whole time was the siphon break. Got that - installed it - NO leak. YAY!!! We could have saved some $ if there had been a nice little video for diagnosing the leak - but - we figure the new parts in a 28-year-old washer is not a bad thing PLUS- after all those years of washing pet beds and painting clothes, etc., The thorough cleaning was well worth the cost.
