Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Refrigerator was not cooling   Dennis L. • Mount Wolf , PA • October 31, 2016

Took access panel off the back of the refrigerator with 1/4 inch nut driver and found that the compressor was not running properly (humming and hot but not compressing). The compressor cooling fan was working as well as the fan in the freezer compartment. I fixed the same problem with another refrigerator by replacing the relay and start capacitor on the compressor. Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You No cooling and no hum from compressor when plugged in   Collin H. • Quincy , WA • October 23, 2014

I suspected the start-relay and tested it due to the lint plugged condenser coils. The start-relay rattled when shook, a telling sign it is no good due to over heating. I tested the compressor terminals and compared them the results with the Tech Data Sheet found with the unit, to find my compressor was still good. I checked the start capacitor with a capacitor tester, comparing the results with the rating printed on the side of the capacitor and found it to be good. I cleaned the condenser... Read more

Estate Overload Protector (Compressor)
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WP2183456

This overload protector is a safety device that mounts on the compressor and opens the circuit if overheating or excessive current is detected. Replacing a failed protector can help restore reliable compressor start-up and protect the motor from damage.

  • Monitors compressor temperature/current and interrupts power during an overload condition
  • Helps prevent compressor overheating and winding damage
  • Common symptoms: refrigerator not cooling, compressor won't start, clicking or humming then shutting off, repeated cycling from the rear machine compartment
  • Visible heat damage or a burnt odor at the start device area may indicate failure
What's included: 1 compressor overload protector Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; work in a well-ventilated area
  • Access the rear machine compartment; remove the cover to reach the compressor start assembly
  • Note wire positions and orientation; the overload fits on the compressor terminal alongside the start device/relay—seat it fully and securely
  • Inspect connectors for heat damage and ensure tight, clean terminals before restoring power

Estate Overload (Compressor)
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: 4387535

This compressor overload is the thermal protector for your refrigerator's compressor. It opens the circuit when the motor overheats or draws excessive current, helping prevent damage and restoring reliable starts when the original protector fails.

  • Interrupts power to protect the compressor during overheat or overcurrent conditions
  • If failed, symptoms include: compressor won't start, repeated clicking or brief hum then stop, warm refrigerator/freezer, and an unusually hot compressor shell
  • A weak protector may trip repeatedly and reset after cooling, causing intermittent cooling
  • Works in tandem with the start relay/device to manage compressor startup current
What's included: 1 compressor overload protector Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing and pull the unit forward for rear access
  • Remove the rear cover; note wire positions and take a photo for reference
  • Pull the old overload straight off the compressor terminal; transfer leads and firmly seat the new overload in the same orientation
  • Capacitors can retain a charge—handle with care; reinstall cover and restore power to test

This part fixes the following symptoms
  • Won't start
  • Fridge too warm

This compressor start device energizes the refrigerator compressor's start winding to begin the cooling cycle, then disengages it. Replacing a weak or failed start device can restore reliable starts and address repeated clicking and warm/no-cool symptoms.

  • Provides initial power to the compressor's start winding for reliable startup
  • Disengages the start circuit once the compressor is running
  • Common failure symptoms: compressor won't start, frequent clicking from the rear, refrigerator or freezer not cooling
  • Heat damage or burnt odor on the old device may be present when it fails
What's included: One compressor start device assembly
  • Unplug the refrigerator before servicing; wear cut-resistant gloves
  • Remove the rear access panel to reach the compressor compartment
  • Note wire positions; if your model uses a separate run capacitor, transfer it; move wires to the new device one at a time
  • Align the device with the compressor terminals and press straight on until fully seated; reinstall any cover or retainer

Estate Start Relay (Refrigerator Compressor)
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: 2154436

This start relay controls power to the compressor's start winding so the refrigerator can start and run. Replacing a weak or burned relay restores dependable compressor start-up and can stop repeated clicking with warming temperatures.

  • Energizes the compressor's start winding to provide initial torque, then disengages from the circuit
  • Common failure symptoms: refrigerator not cooling or intermittently warm; compressor hums/clicks and won't start; relay rattles, smells burnt, or shows heat damage; overload trips
  • Helps prevent hard-start conditions that stress the compressor
  • The relay contacts are open/shorted, the compressor may fail to start and cycle off on overload
What's included: 1 start relay Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; wear appropriate PPE
  • Access the rear machine compartment; remove the relay cover on the compressor. Note wire positions, pull the old relay straight off the compressor pins, transfer wires, and fully seat the new relay in the same orientation
  • If equipped, safely discharge the run capacitor; inspect the overload, wiring, and terminals for heat damage and address as needed
  • Reinstall the cover. If the compressor still won't start, further diagnosis of the start device, capacitor, or compressor is required

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Compressor not running.   Eric A. • Canton , MA • December 16, 2017

My freezer and fridge were blowing warm and all my food in there was garbage... Lights and fans all working. Looked up some YouTube videos on what it could be. Bad compressor least likely culprit even though it wasn't running. It wasn't doing that "click whirr" thing if it were trying to start. It just flat out wasn't running. So, check the overload and relay that attach right on the side of the compressor. I did, and I shook them. They jingled like loose change=BAD. Ordered new ones and... Read more
