The Clutch is an OEM part for GE washing machines. This component is essential for engaging the washer’s transmission to facilitate the proper spinning and agitating of the drum during wash cycles.
Over time, the clutch can wear out or become damaged due to frequent use, heavy loads, or mechanical stress. Replacing a faulty clutch is crucial for maintaining the washer’s performance and efficiency.
Symptoms of a bad clutch include:
- The washer failing to spin or agitate
- Unusual noises during the wash cycle, such as grinding or whining
- Clothes remaining wet after the spin cycle
- The drum not rotating smoothly or at all
This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

It made a grinding noise during rinse cycle. Armand S. • Yucca , AZ • July 09, 2023
I ordered the parts, after assuring my diagnosis was correct from APP’s knowledgeable representative, and they were shipped quickly.
I tipped the washer and disassembled the parts to be replaced and then installed a new clutch, clutch spring and mode shifter.

The Mode Shifter & Shaft Assembly is an OEM replacement part for GE washing machines. It is a mechanical component located inside the washer tub that allows for shifting between agitation, spin, and other cycles. The mode shifter and shaft assembly receive input from the control system to precisely change the operational mode at designated points in the cycle.
Causes of a bad mode shifter & shaft assembly include worn out or damaged internal gears, stripped or broken shafts, or a loss of integrity in components that restrict smooth shifting between modes.
Symptoms of a bad mode shifter & shaft assembly include:
- Inability to start or change wash cycles
- The washer getting stuck in one mode of operation
- Grinding noises and vibrations during cycle shifts
- Premature ending of cycles
This GE OEM replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Washer would not spin nor adgitate Jeff A. • Stow , OH • June 28, 2015
Motor control board was flashing 4 times, indicating that the mode shifter had an error. I disconnected the mode shifter's wire from the controller and measured the resistance between the 2 leads with an ohmmeter. Since the reading was infinite, that meant that the mode shifter coil or in-line thermal sensor was electrically open, i.e. bad. As this fix is near a complete tear-down of the washing machine, here are a few tips I discovered. 1) the hub nut is difficult to remove and you need a...

This shaft and tube assembly supports and drives the washer's inner basket during the spin cycle. Replacing a worn or bent assembly restores smooth rotation and helps reduce noise, vibration, and basket wobble.
- Supports and centers the inner tub for stable spinning
- Provides the rotating drive surface that turns the basket in spin
- Works with the washer's drive system to deliver spin power
- Common symptoms: no or weak spin, scraping/grinding noises, excessive vibration, or basket wobble
Includes: One shaft and tube assembly. Install notes:
- Disconnect power and water supply before servicing; wear gloves and eye protection
- Access typically requires removing the top/console, agitator or wash plate, inner basket, and retaining hardware
- Inspect related parts and replace if worn or leaking during reassembly
- After installation, level the washer and run a spin test to check for proper operation and leaks

Ge washer was very loud during spin cycle Vincent B. • Merrick , NY • January 31, 2016
After researching the problem on this site, I realized that the most likely cause was a bad bearing contained in the shaft & tube assembly. Essentially, the tub seal failed & allowed water to travel down the shaft & into the housing containing the bearing. I confirmed this by pulling the front cover off of the unit & noticed some brown water pooled directly under the shaft & tube assembly. I followed the disassembly instructions on this site & it wasn't too bad but did take some time as pretty...
