My first hour: I investigated first by pulling out refridgerator to see if the water line hose was kinked. I started under the kitchen sink where it begins, coming from faucet water supply. A bit of research on the internet indicated the most likely problem was with the defrost system. I found the service manual for the refrigerator and was able to determine that the defrost heater and thermostat passed the self test. The refrigerator would perform a forced defrost which resulted in a cold refrigerator. I watched the video on replacing the switch on a side freezer where prying out to original switch did not look difficult. I then got on the floor and tried to pry out my switch. Had a terrible time (locking tab or switch body hardened with time?) and mangled the switch terribly and the upper panel of the freezer somewhat, but the switch did come out. Toughest part of this repair is figuring out how to get things apart. Amana doesn't provide you a repair manual showing how to disengage the various plastic covers. Initially disassembled the bottom freezer compartment so I could get to the evaporator coils; they were completely frozen in block of ice, restricting air flow to the fridge above. Left new gasket on the table overnight so it could stretch out. Removed the door. Temporarily replaced it with plastic and tape. Pulled off old gasket. Cleaned surfaces with decreaser and wiped dry with paper towels and alcohol. Inserted new gasket. Replaced door. Read more

So this is a poor design in the first case. Not having a center support in the back almost guarantees a failure there eventually. I kludged together a support in my original more than a year ago, but finally the part broke too bad to limp along with anymore. This is the part I needed. The fan has a very thin wire in it's coil, and when that wire breaks, you need a new fan. In a previous repair, i noticed that an ice build-up had dislodged the wiring on my fan and severed the coil winding. I was able to undo the winding a couple of turns and get it working again. But more recently, the fan stopped and there was no repairing it. So i ordered a new fan from AppliancePartsPros.com and it got here in very good time. I determined that the motor that drives the damper valve that allows cold air into the refer was noisy. I ordered the replacement part from AppliancePartsPro.com. It arrived within 3 days and I changed the units out, which took about 10 minutes total. All is quiet with the refer now. Read more

The manual had instructions for pulling things apart, the flaps over the drawer tops and the clear plastic inserts in the shelf. Flaps--Easiest to work with when the shelf is out and upside down. Slide flaps to the side a little to release the axle pin on the flaps from the receptacle hole on the shelf frame. Clear plastic plates are held in with a plastic pin on the side of the shelf frame. Carefully pull the side off the shelf there away from the pin slot until the insert pops out.... Read more
