Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Ice maker failed   James T. • Summerville , SC • June 02, 2015

Purchased a new ice maker, and mounting bracket, installed them, plugged in the ice maker. One note of advice. Put your old ice maker and ALL extra parts in a safe place where you can find them, but your significant other cannot. Why? Because if your significant finds them he/she may dispose of them and you will need them to install your new ice maker, I have learned the hard way. Read more

Replaced door latch and switch. Parts are plastic so you must know what you are doing to avoid breaking new parts. Videos were hard to find for my model - eventually I found a video that addressed a different problem but required disassembly of a washer cabinet similar to mine. I removed the control panel using a putty knife and unplugged the wire to the latch switch. Then I remove 3 screws securing the washer's top panel to the back panel. Using a rubber mallet, I gently knocked the top panel... Read more

Screw
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WP489464

This is a replacement screw designed to work with a wide range of household appliances. It is used for many purposes in these appliances, from holding body panels together to securing electronics into control boards. However, screws are subject to damage through corrosion, impact, and improper installation/removal. In most cases, the primary damage to this screw is through corrosion – it may become rusted or corroded in place, depending on the appliance and the maintenance provided during its lifespan. The screw may also be stripped or rounded due to improper removal or installation. If the screw is damaged, lost, or corroded in place, it will need to be replaced. In most cases, removal will require nothing more than a Phillips head screwdriver or the appropriately sized socket with a ratchet. However, if the screw is damaged, it may require a tap set to remove it from its mounting location. Note that this is a genuine OEM replacement screw made from durable, high-quality metal, and is sold individually. It fits Whirlpool, Maytag, Roper, Estate, Amana, Crosley, and Thermador appliances. It is used in over 150 machines, ranging from washers and dryers to air conditioners.

Dispenser Motor Assembly
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WP2252129

This dispenser motor assembly drives the refrigerator's in-door ice dispenser so cubes dispense when you press the paddle. Replacing a weak, seized, or noisy motor restores smooth, reliable operation of the dispenser mechanism. What it does:

  • Powers the dispenser mechanism to move ice through the chute when activated
  • Works with the switch and control to deliver ice on demand
  • Failure can cause no ice dispensing, a humming/clicking noise, or intermittent operation
  • Present as the auger/drive not turning even though the dispenser is selected
What's included:
  • One dispenser motor assembly
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power to the refrigerator before servicing
  • Access the dispenser area per your model; remove trim/covers carefully to avoid breaking tabs and watch for sharp edges
  • Note wire lead orientation and mounting layout; transfer any reusable brackets or spacers from the old unit
  • Restore power and test dispenser for proper operation after reassembly

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Ice would not dispense could hear motor running   James B. • Julian , CA • April 17, 2017

When there was no ice in the bin, the auger turned, but with any ice, the auger simply stalled and could not push the ice around. Did not know where the problem was, but thought if I replaced the entire lower assembly (ordered a new motor, shaft, spring and coupler for the bottom part), that should do it. Took about 45 minutes from start to finish, but ice now dispenses fine as cubes or crushed. Read more

Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool

What's included: 1 PTC start relay Install notes:
  • Disconnect power and remove the rear access panel to reach the compressor
  • Allow components to cool; note wire locations and take a reference photo
  • Pull the old relay straight off the compressor pins; align and firmly seat the new relay in the same orientation, then reconnect wires
  • If your unit uses a run capacitor and/or separate overload protector, reconnect per the wiring diagram before restoring power

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Ice dispenser was skipping so not dispensing ice   Del H. • Midlothian , TX • September 03, 2018

The problem was that the motor coupler & shaft had a tiny bit of rust at their union. With the weight of the ice bin it rusted in the lowest position. This didn't allow the motor coupler to float on the shaft. There is a spring inside the shaft that pushes up on the motor coupler keeping it engaged in the ice bin coupler above. This coupler in turn rotates the auger in the bin to dispense the ice. I removed the motor coupler & shaft, tapped the coupler loose and filed off the rust. This allowed... Read more
