For Bosch Circulation Pump (Part Number: OEM8479161)

Elly T for Model Number SHV57C03UC/22

Our Bosch SHV57C03UC/22 dishwasher starts its cycle you can hear things starting normal then after about a minute it just switches to a loud bussing sound. When we open the dishwasher there is some water in the bottom and we can see dripping from the lower arm, but neither arm has moved and there is no water on the dishes. We have cleared out the bottom and removed the drain impeller cover and ensured that was clear. We have added water (with vinegar to the bottom and let it soak and prime the dishwasher, but no change. We replaced the lower spray arm which was cracked. We replaced the water inlet valve and again, wash started normal but then just buzzing. We manually moved the float arm through front lower panel and it seems to be working fine. We reset the cycle/cut the power to make sure the program was fully reset. Any ideas of what the issue would be?

Elly, Based on the information provided, this issue sounds like it would be a faulty circulation pump on the unit.

Our Bosch dishwasher will no longer run a full cycle, and throws an E24 error code. It runs varying lengths of time, and sometimes throws the error right away, although usually when it has stopped in the middle of the cycle. When it has been sitting a day it usually runs better. I looked up this error code, and saw that it is generally the drain system, but can also be caused by the circulation pump or main control. I wonder if because it stops at different times during the cycle it might be circ pump or main control, whereas the drain pump might be a more specific part of the cycle? I'm not sure how to proceed with this.

1 Answer

Collin, With the unit stopping at various times then the issue will most likely be a faulty control module.

A few days ago I noticed that my dishwasher was not cleaning the dishes. When I open the door during a wash, I can see that the bottom spray arm turns, the top arm does not. Both have water coming out, but the bottom arm water barely reaches the top rack, and the top wrm only sprays a couple of inches. There is plenty of water in the machine. I tried the same without the strainer (to make sure it is not a clogged strainer): no change. I opened the drain sump, and found a bit of debris there, which I removed, but it has not changed the issue. The impeller seems OK, and it turns easily, with slight hesitation at some points, as you would expect from an electric motor. I did have a little bit of an issue at some point in that the machine would not drain properly, but not recently. It seems to me that the pressure is low, which could be a bad impeller, or a bad drain pump, would you agree? Or could it be a bad impeller? How would I check?

1 Answer

Mike, It would be more of a issue with the impeller than it would be with the drain pump. If the unit is not building enough pressure then it will cause this issue.

Hello Tom. You will need to check the type of soap and rinse aid being used in the unit. It sounds like it is coming from that.

Ruiz, The filters could be removed to test run to see if the filters would be the issue but you should check the circulation pump impeller to make sure that the pump impeller is not damaged.

Hello Stewart. CIRCULATION PUMP / MOTOR REMOVAL: Disconnect the four wire leads, then grasp the Circulation Motor and turn clockwise a quarter turn until the Motor stops. Now, remove the Motor / Rear Pump Assembly from the Front Pump Housing. Note: The Front Pump Housing remains in place when the Motor is removed. With the Motor / Rear Pump Assembly removed from the unit, separate the Motor from the Rear Pump Assembly. To do so, first remove the Impeller by placing a block in the rear of the Motor and then turning the Impeller counter-clockwise. The Rear Pump Assembly consists of four components: 1. Rear Pump Housing. 3. Impeller. 2. Main Pump Seal. 4. Impeller Seal. Each component can be replaced as an individual item. TO INSTALL: First, locate the Key Square on the Front Pump Housing. Next, locate the Key Square Cut Out on the Rear Pump Housing. When replacing the Pump / Motor make sure to line up the Key Square with the Key Square Cut Out. Then bring the two pump halves together, and turn the Motor clockwise until it stops. Service note: The Impeller Seal Spring is compressed when the two halves of the Pump Assembly are brought together. This will take a little force, so make sure to have a good grip on the Sump as you compress the spring. Now, reattach the wiring leads, test and check for leaks.

Neil, The best way to check the motors is for voltage getting to the motor during the wash cycle. If there is 120 vac getting to the motor but does not run then the issue will be a faulty motor.

David, You will want to access the impeller of the circulation pump and make sure that there is nothing caught in the impeller. If there is like a bread tie or something of that nature that got in there it would cause this type of noise. If this checks ok then the bearings of the motor would be the likely cause of the noise.

Almost immediately after I start the dishwasher, a buzzing/grinding sound comes from beneath the unit. It finally got so the dishwasher would not wash. I initially thought it was a faulty drain pump, which I have now replaced. The buzzing/grinding continues on start-up and now the flood pan beneath the unit immediately fills with water. When I open the dishwasher door, I can hear the soft sound of the pump (presumably the drain pump). If I empty the flood pan and turn the unit back on, it buzzes/grinds and the flood pan refills with water. Is it the circulation pump?

1 Answer

Hello P.S., This sounds like a piece of broken glass is in the sump assembly and is contacting the pump impeller. You will need to access this from inside the unit. Pull out the filters and remove the one screw visible from inside the sump assembly. Use a wet vac to clear the area. This will normally correct the complaint you listed.
