Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Air Vent Assembly (Part Number: OEM18039411)

1 Answer

Michael, the vent assembly WPW10164259 is motorized and should measure 600-1800O of resistance. However, with the power turned off to the entire dishwasher, the heating circuit will need to be tested at the main control from the connection P9 to P3 and it should measure between 10-30O of resistance. If it reads 0L, then there may be a wiring issue that would need to be traced. If the resistance tests good, then the most likely failure would be the main control WPW10084141.

As I started the dishwasher (purchased 2/20/02) I heard a pop and saw a spark coming out of the upper left corner. There was a slight burnt scent. The indicator lights will go on for all settings, but the dishwasher does not start and the delay timer lights (in the upper left corner) do not come on. I have opened the control panel and there is nothing obviously burnt. I checked the wax motor for resistance to the 2 leads and there was no resistance. I could not turn the interior air vent to remove the assembly. What does the wax motor do? What do you suggest?

1 Answer

Laura, The wax motor opens the vent on the unit. If the wax motor has no resistance then it would be faulty and would need to change the vent.

Giulio for Model Number Whirlpool GU1500XTKS0

My dishwasher drips water from the vent side of the door. I've replaced the door seal, tightened all the T-15 door screws, and inspected the vent assembly. I understand the wax motor on the vent assembly is only used to vent steam when in drying mode. Is it possible the wax motor is not working properly and is letting water leak down the door during the wash cycle which is causing the slow drip from the left corner of the door? Any idea what might cause this type of leak? (I only see 1 drop every 20-30 seconds during the wash cycle.)

Hello Giulio, You will need to check the spray arm holes for debris on all spray arms, make sure none of the spray arms are separating since they are made of two pieces of plastic melted together at th3e factory, and the middle spray arm is properly meshing with the feed tube in the back of the unit and no gaskets are missing. Anything that will cause a "wave" in the water in the bottom of the tub will cause this complaint.

I am still at a loss for an explanation of the "Wax Motor" I see a rubber flap that controls the exhaust vapor out of the top of the door (and into my wood counter-top). It vents during every washer run, I don't use a heated dry cycle. I also saw (while replacing the thermal fuse) that the "wax motor" plastic case was partially separated. Is it possible that some damage to this electrical part has caused a failure of the thermal fuse? Will an ohm meter between terminals show a particular resistance or an open or a short? Thanks.

1 Answer

KRS03, The wax motor will not show a resistance but if it is separated then it would need to be replaced.

Hello Joe. Inside the door panel you will see the round vent grill. You twist that to remove it from the panel and to remove the air vent from the door.

Jan for Model Number 665.17263400 Kenmore Elite Dishwasher (old, very old)

Does the drying 'vent' have a small blower in it? Or does the power only operate an open/close solenoid? I ask because I do not see moisture 'blowing' out of it, it is venting, but not blowing, just trickles out with convection. I'm fixing to tear the door off, to replace the air intake at the bottom, as the old one has cracked with age. That sounds like way too much fun, fraught with failure, so I thought I'd check on the vent, so, if necessary, I could replace it and get an 'easy win', as that looks pretty straightforward! Thanks for any help!

1 Answer

Jan, The vent assembly motor just opens and closes the door of the vent. There is no motor inside of the vent.

W.B. for Model Number 665.17482300

I have a Kenmore Dishwasher, model number #665.17482300. I had to replace the vent assembly 8545533. I disconnected the wires that connect to it and forgot where which one reconnects where. There is a blue and white wire that connects to this vent assembly, but again, I forgot if the blue or white wire connects in front (closes to the inside of the dishwasher) and if the white color connects in the back or vice versa. I don’t want to mix up the connections before running. Can you help me to tell me where to reconnect the blue and white wires to this Kenmore dishwasher model number 665.17482300. Thanks

1 Answer

Hello W.B., Since this part WP8545533 is not polarized, it will not matter which terminal you connect which wire to. Either way will complete the circuit satisfactorily and it will operate as designed.

Hello Edward, You need to make sure you are replacing the wiring harness with the fuse in the unit. If not, it will continue to blow.
