The Temperature Switch is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool front-load washing machines. Located inside the unit, it monitors water temperatures during heating cycles.

Causes of a bad temperature switch can include failure or drift of internal components that monitor heat over extended use. Exposure to fluctuations in water temperatures during wash cycles may also impact switch performance.

Symptoms of a bad temperature switch can be:

  • Inability to heat water to set temperatures
  • Unexpected fluctuations in water temperature during cycles

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore front-load washing machines.

Kiersten for Model Number Maytag Centennial

Our top loading washer is 5 years old and has just started to give us trouble. It does not have a lid lock but as soon as you shut the lid to start a load, it begins to aggitate and fill with water at the same time. It seems to go through a regular cycle but after the last spin cycle, it fill again with water and then is done. The only way to prevent this is to put it in "Extra Rinse" mode. I would like to pass it along to my sister to use but want to fix it first. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Jt for Model Number 395535 or SM8280867, Whirlpool Ultimate care II Wash Machine

Water dumps onto the floor under machine. Seems that the water level is too high when there is clothing in the machine. Took outside and watched it fill on each load size setting and it fills to the very top of the basket on each setting. I'm guessing from this that it is over flowing. Which failed part would be causing this. Also there is gel looking stuff in the drain tube. look like an algie build up would this have anything to do with the problem I am experiencing? THanks very much.

Hi. Look with a magnifying glass (if necessary) under the lid and send me the model # so I can send the correct part #'s. It sounds like the pressure switch or the press. switch hose has debris in it or is loose. Remove the hose from the pressure switch and blow back into the tub to see if there are any debris in the hose. If so then replace the hose onto the pressure switch and advance the timer into a spin to reset the unit. I will need the model # to assist you. Thank You.

Pat for Model Number MVWC6ESWW1

When I pull the timer switch it will not fill with water. If I advance the timer it will start to agitate. I have replaced the timer and the water valve with negative results. The lid switch is working and I'm getting power to the hot and cold contacts at the water valve. I'm not getting power to the two contacts just below the hot and cold valves on the water valve, which I believe will allow the water to flow. I even filled the tub with water to see if it would start the agitator with negative results. Should I replace the water sensor AP44596660? By the way GREAT web site, I will recommend to all. Your videos and parts delivery are also fantastic. Pat

Hello Pat, Sounds like a pressure switch has failed or the pressure switch hose is clogged. Remove the pressure switch hose from the sensor switch and blow through it. If it was clogged, you will feel the clog "pop" free. If this is the case, you should then run a sanitation cycle (normal wash cycle) with hot water and white vinegar to remove any other sedimentation and mineral deposits before washing any more clothes. If not, the sensor switch WPW10248240 should be replaced to correct the issue.

Hello Otis. Insert a flat blade putty or butter knife under the front corners and press in on the clips and release them and flip the panel backwards. Now you can access the sensor switch WPW10248240. Hope this helps.

Cj for Model Number WTW57ESVW1 & WTW57ESVH1

I have replaced the Auto-load -Water level/ temperature sensor P/N W10248240 3 times and it fails after 12-16 loads. The last time Whirlpool told me to replace the Flow Meter P/N W1017893 as well as this Auto-load switch. Guess what, The washer will not fill with water again after 5 days of 3-4 loads of wash . There is 122 volts going into the water sensing level switch and No power comuing out again. Is there an Alternative switch that is more robust? Why is this switch failing repeatedly? By the way, The Red WYW57ESVH1 washer that is 1 1/2 years older which is identical other than the color has never had a problem . I wonder what changed? Thanks, CJ

Hi CJ. If the lid switch is opened without first shutting the timer off, it will arc the sensor switch and cause premature failure. Sensor Switch part # WPW10248240. Have you taken a electrical power surge while the washer is operating ? Thank You.

Joel, The manufacturer has not supplied any crcuit information for testing this switch, at this point. Based on experience and several repair posts, you'll need to do a process of elimination, in your case, as long as the air dome hose from the switch to the side of the tub, is not kinked, twisted or clogged, and there are no loose wire connections at the switch, and there is a sufficient amount of water supplied to the fill valve . You'll need to replace the switch assembly WPW10248240. Good Luck and Thanks

Hello Steve. No, you can not bypass the switch WPW10248240. These usually go bad by opening the lid without stopping the machine first. This will cause the switch to arc inside and go bad. Hope this helps.
