Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Capacitor (Part Number: OEM18040311)

1 Answer

Hello Robert, The capacitor should not get hot. If the capacitor is getting hot, the motor is either in a bind or the windings have shorted, providing too much voltage through the capacitor. The wiring and motor should be checked for proper resistances and connections. The voltage at the receptacle should be checked for the proper power supply and polarity. If you have further questions, please provide the model number so we can be specific to your unit and assist in locating the cause of the issue.

Hello Mary. You need to check the lid switch assembly WP8318084 in the unit and see if it is bad. If so, it can cause the issues you are having with the unit.

Hello David, It can be tested with a capacitance meter CT1 easiest. It can be tested with a resistance meter, but this will tell you if the capacitor is shorted or open. It will not tell you the capacitive value if the component has drifted out of tolerance. You put the meter across the terminals and watch the display for counting up to infinity. This will occur quickly and disappear very quickly. Now reverse the leads on the terminals, (reverse the polarity). The same thing should happen, but a bit more pronounced. It will once again rise very quickly and go to an infinite reading. This tells you that the capacitor isn't shorted or open internally.

Moroni, Can you hear the lid switch "click" when you open and close the loading lid ? You may have a damaged lid switch assembly WP8318084 ? If you had water spraying inside the cabinet or control console, theres no telling what may have gotten damaged, or shorted out. You'll need to raise the control console and remove the cabinet and visually inspect all the wires and components for damage. Which hose had the hole in it, that may give you a better idea of where to start. We'll send you some access information, that may help you out.

Thank you for your answer earlier. My machine was filling at every setting, (wash, fill, spin etc,,,all settings except off)I put a new timer in, and now it will not do anything on any of the settings except spin at which point the machine allows water to fill along with the barrel turning. I do not know if it is turning to spin speed or just like an agitate. When i hooked the old timer up again, it did the same as before, fill at every setting...suggestions?

Bob, You'll need to remove the front panel and front bulkhead assembly, and check for an article stuck in the blower fan and duct work under the lint filter. Thanks and Good Luck

Chris for Model Number llr9245bq1

The machine will fill with water but will not start/turn. I can hear a buzzing when the motor should start. The Lid Switch is making contact (checked it with a meter for continuity when lid is closed and when manually triggering). Changed the motor with no luck. The Coupler is intact and I can spin it by hand and watch the drum flywheel start to turn. I am unsure if the start capacitor is healthy. Machine will not drain when advancing the timer to the drain portion of any cycle. Suggestions on what to look at next?
