For Whirlpool Capacitor (Part Number: OEM18040311)

John Doe

I love your videos. You make everything seem so easy. I am an appliance technician and I have never worked on an old unit like the ones in ur videos that was as clean as the ones in ur videos. Of course its going to be easy when everything is already new. You should warn people that some older machines are going to be tough to get the motor coupler off, or to get the cabinet back on the frame. just saying. not all of us have a perfect machine to work on. The machines in ur videos don't have any signs of wear what so ever. very misleading.

1 Answer

John, Thanks for your input. The majority of the products in our videos are "used" products, 10 or 15 years old, no 1 or 2 years old yes. Besides, the technical staff is here to assist consumers in the repairs on their products with service information and recommended procedures and practices, we don't feel that that's misleading. Thanks again

Jessica for Model Number LSR7233DQ0

I am trying to replace my capacitor as my machine just buzzes/hums loudly and smells a bit like burning after it fills. It wouldn't drain so I drained it myself. The capacitor is corroded/rusty and the prongs snapped off inside the wire connectors. Can I get new wire connectors? The prongs look like they are corroded inside the connector and I can't pull them out, they just tear leaving pieces inside. I'm having trouble telling what part exactly the wire connector to the prong is. Or do I need the entire wiring harness? Also, there is a black "dust" that sort of looks like steel wool. Is this from the Clutch? Should I replace it as well? or from the brake? I really appreciate any help! Jessica

Jessica, You can buy 1/4" terminals and cut the old ones off and splice on the new ones. Also the black that is showing could be cause by bad clutch lining and would be recommended to replace the clutch.

Ryan P for Model Number 110.27822790

My Kenmore washer (model# 110.27822790) will not agitate, spin, or drain. The washer will only fill now and when it is on other portions of the cycle, it only hums at the motor and usually produces a burning smell. I disconnected the motor from the pump and gearcase and had the exact same problem with no load on the motor. I also had access to a spare motor to try. I installed this spare motor but still had the exact same problems. I also checked the resistance on various windings for my motor and the spare I tried. All the resistance readings appear to be in spec and the readings were comparable between the 2 motors. The timer appears to cycle correctly (no humming in the off position, washer fills when it is supposed to, etc.). I checked the start-up capacitor. It is not shorted but it is weak, reading ~175 vs. a spec of 189 to 227 MFD. Is this capacitor too weak to start the motor? Thanks.

Hello Ryan. It could be the capacitor, but if you replace it and the issue continues, you will need to replace the timer on the unit.

Jay, In most cases when the unit is not spinning or draining the first thing to look at is the pump and whether it is turning. The fact that the unit is not draining would be an indicator that the pump may be seized up and needing to be replaced or that there is something clogged in it.

Mark H. for Model Number Sears 11026652503

I have a sears/whirlpool direct drive washer approx 5yrs old. The washer reaches the rinse cycle after agitating fine and won't pump out the water. I bypassed the lid switch took cabinet off and heard the motor humming at this time and getting hot. I was able to get it to pump and spin by helping it along at the coupler. I took the pump off ( no obstructions) it spins freely, the coupler is good, I took the motor off and was able to spin the coupler attached to transmission. The motor windings test ok with an ohmmeter and the motor switch as well. All that I can think of is the capacitor. I removed it and measured voltage across it and got zero, that should have been 120v in my opinion, using an ohmmeter it reads a open circuit across the terminals. Am I looking at a bad capacitor here? Thank you in advance

1 Answer

Mark, The problem wouldn't be in the capacitor, you may have tested it wrong, and besides the washer motor wouldn't run in the agitate mode, either. Since the motor runs in the agitate mode, but hums in the spin / drain mode, the issue should be in the timer WP8541945.

Hello. The capacitor is like a boost starter for the motor and it is needed on the unit.

Joe for Model Number Whirlpool Washer Model LSR8233JQ0

My wife did laundry last night and the washer worked fine. On the 2nd load the washer filled up fine. It would not agitate, spin or drain. When we adjusted the knob to try to have it spin and drain the water it just made a humming sound. I know the lid switch is in good order because I replaced it 2 months ago with the help of one of your videos. I'm guessing that the capacitor 8572717 has gone bad. How can I check to see if that is the problem? I would rather replace the capacitor than purchase a new machine. However, if the problem is due to a faulty motor or transmission I would probably just buy a new machine.

1 Answer

Hello Joe, Since the unit is humming and will not drain, the first place to check is the drain pump. It is common for debris including buttons and parts of zippers to get into this area. In many cases, clearing the pump/sump area will correct the issue. Other cases require the replacement of the drain pump WP3363394. Very few capacitors fail on the motor but when the issue is capacitor related, it is normally a broken wire to it or a poor connection. To test the capacitor, remove all wires from the capacitor and short the two terminals with a screwdriver. Use an ohm meter from one terminal to the other. The reading on a good capacitor will start with a resistance reading that quickly fades to infinity. Reverse the meter leads on the terminals and test again. If the same thing happens, it is assumed to be a good capacitor. If either direction shows no contact or a complete circuit with a consistent reading, the capacitor WP8572717 has failed.

AB Jones, The first thing that you will need to do is to repair the wire for the capacitor. If that wire was loose and broke when pulling it off then this could be causing the issue as this is a run capacitor and would need to be hooked up to run. It is possible that the start winding of the motor is also faulty since the motor will not start.

Scott, If the motor is humming, this would eliminate the lid switch and timer. You can test to see if it is the pump that may be seizing up by removing the pump from the motor and see if it will operate normally. If it does then check the pump for restrictions. If the pump is clear then replace the pump. If with the pump off it still does not work properly then replace the motor.
