The Complete Agitator Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This assembly includes the central vertical agitator component along with the retainer ring. Together they are responsible for the agitation and rubbing motions that work to remove soils and stains from clothing during wash cycles.

Causes of a bad agitator assembly can include wear and tear leading to wobbly or loose motions, cracks in plastic components from repeated impacts, or corrosion of metal components.

Symptoms of a bad complete agitator assembly include:

  • Vibration or shaking issues during agitation
  • Improper or lack of agitating of clothes
  • An agitator that is difficult to rotate by hand
  • Cracks, missing pieces or corrosion visible upon inspection

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and some Kenmore models.

Hello Mo, This is a standard right hand thread so to remove it you need to turn it counterclockwise. You will have to reach in with the other hand and hold the agitator so it doesn't turn while unscrewing it.

Hello Rosa. If the unit spins, but the clothes are still wet, you will need to replace the thrust bearing kit on the unit.

Hello Mike, This isn't grease but old spoiled fabric softener. The agitator needs to be removed and thoroughly cleaned. You see, most folks don't realize that fabric softener is made of 80% to 90% animal fat. The remaining content is colorings and perfumes to mask its' decomposition. This means that it will spoil. If you want to try an experiment, put a drip of fabric softener on top of the dryer. Look at it every day. It will start out blue and slowly turn green, then yellow, then brown, and eventually black. Somewhere between the yellow and black stages a chunk will break loose and get into the wash. Being animal fat, it will stain clothing just like grease will. This is why the manufacturer recommends to dilute the softener with hot water before putting the softener into the dispenser. This prevents the "clinging" of the softener from making the big mess that seems to exist in most homes.

Corie for Model Number Kenmore Series 80 washer Model 110 22882 100

Hello~I have a Kenmore Series 80 washer that is having agitator problems. First, the agitator base/augur/agitator is coming loose during the washing cycle, so much so that it actually can (very easily) be pulled out of the washer (one whole piece). This has happened before and we were able to screw it back on but that is no longer working. Now, not only is the agitator needing twisting (rotating the base one way and the top piece of the agitator the other way keeps it coming completely out so easily) it is no longer agitating. The washer fills, spins, and drains completely but the clothes are not getting as clean and the detergent isn't mixing well. Is it possible to fix it?

1 Answer

Corie, Yes it is possible to "fix" your washer. You first have to determine why the agitator is loose and coming up and off the agitator shaft. There is a 7/16 in. bolt and washer that hold the agitator assembly to the shaft. You'll need to remove the agitator cap, then the cover and ring, to check the bolt. You'll also want to remove the agitator, and check the "dogs" and cams 285810 for excess wear and damage or distortion, this could cause the agitator auger to operate eratically, the auger should move freely in one direction only(counter clockwise) if it will turn in either direction, the dogs and cams will need to be replaced

Jim, your model should read RAS8245EQ1 (S instead of a 5). Yes, the upper agitator does need to be repaired. The agitator repair kit is part number 285811. Thanks!

Mary Anne, The issue is most likely a "slipping" clutch 285785 coupling 285753A and or clogged drain pump WP3363394 . You first want to check and make sure there's nothing stuck between the two tubs, and the washer drains properly, It has to be empty, before the tub will spin. We'll send you some additional information that may be helpful.

Hello Paul, This sounds like you may have gotten the cam driven bearing or the cam itself mis-installed. I would dis-assemble it one more time to insure that the items are placed in the correct order and not upside down. Please don't take this the wrong way as experienced technicians make the mistake and have to go through the same process. Also the parts you put in should have looked like the ones you removed. It is possible to have the wrong kit.
