Phil for Model Number MDB5100AWQ maytag dishwasher

Moved DW from inlaw's lake condo (rarely used) to our weekend house this weekend. All went well until a few minutes into a test cycle when smoke began pouring out both in front and into the adjacent cabinet through the hole cut for water supply/drain. Tried troubleshooting, but it never gives light codes that I have found online. Reset outside breaker, and it came back on. Decided to run it through a complete Heavy/Dry Cycle. It starts, but within a few minutes it reverts to flashing at Light Cycle and Clean. Cold water is in the bottom. The obvious conclusion I jumped to was that the board fried. However, with all that smoke going through to the next cabinet, is there something else I should look at? I don't want to burn up another board. At first glance, I didn't see any burn marks underneath near the motor. I have not pulled the front panel off yet, but will in a few weeks when I am back up there. Thanks

Hello Phil, Check the electrical connection box behind the kickpanel. It is possible for a loose connection to heat up the wire and melt off insulation. Anything putting out enough heat to cause that much smoke will be visible during a quick inspection.

Dale for Model Number Maytag MDB6160AWW

Our Maytag dishwasher died rather suddenly. Some smoke came from the general direction of the control panel, left black soot on the top edge of the door, and when I removed the control panel cover, the upper right side of the control panel circuit board was also covered with soot. I'm pretty sure I need a new control panel, but I'm curious what may have caused the problem, and don't wish to fry a new control panel. One thing I noticed for the last few weeks was what I thought was some sort of water issue. The inside of the dishwasher began developing what looks almost (but not quite) like rust stains on the inner door, sidewalls, and bottom. Is it likely the staining had anything to do with the fried circuit board? My grandson (he's 4) tells me the problem is the water got too hot and caught fire. I love him a bunch, but I'm doubting him just a little. :)

Dale, The control board burning out could just be a bad board. But you will want to check the thermostat for the heater and the heating element itself as this could potentially cause the issue. Also check the water fill in the unit. The heater does come on and if there is no enough water it can cause the unit to get too hot inside.

Hello Bill, You should first check the breaker in the breaker box. You need to turn it off and then back on. If this doesn't get you going, remove the kick panel and the small galvanized box to check the electrical connections. If they are Okay, you will need to remove the inner door panel to check the door switches. One note here, if the unit isn't secured under5 the countertop and can move around, the door switches may not be making properly. The unit has to be secured to the countertop or cabinets and all fi=our feet sharing in the support of the weight of the unit to prevent the door from striking at an angle.

Hello Tom, This can be an issue with either the control board or the control panel. The first thing I recommend is to remove the ribbon cable and check for signs of moisture damage. If moisture damage is present, the control board and panel will have to be replaced along with the seal around the vent. If the ribbon cable is dis-colored, it can be cleaned by rubbing it toward the end only in the direction of the traces with a pencil eraser. I cannot give any specific part numbers without a specific model number.

Hello Gary. The accutemp uses a thermistor to read the temperature inside the tub and turn on and off the heater to keep the water at the correct temperature.
