The Refrigerator Defrost Timer is an OEM Replacement Part designed to manage the automatic defrost system in Whirlpool freezers. Housed at the top inside of the appliance, this component shuts off the cooling system and activates the defrost heater. The timer operates at 120V 60Hz and activates for 33 minutes every 8 hours. The dial on the timer can be turned clockwise to advance it into and out of defrost.

Causes of a faulty Defrost Timer Kit can include electrical issues, mechanical wear and tear over time, or problems with the timer's internal components.

Symptoms of a bad Defrost Timer Kit include:

  • Freezer not defrosting properly, leading to excessive ice buildup
  • Refrigerator running constantly or not cooling effectively
  • Condensation or moisture issues inside the refrigerator
  • Error codes related to the defrost system

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Herberto, You will want to check the continuity of the heater in the unit. If this checks good for continuity then the defrost timer would need to be replaced.

Tr for Model Number SCDT25H

My Amana sided by side stopped cooling both sides.I read some articles on line, looked at some of the answers that were given. I pulled the thermostat out and found both wires off the stat can't believe they would vibrate off.it tripped the GFI.possible one of those wires went to ground and caused it to trip not sure. It is cooling now, will see if it's still working in the am. I think the defrost timer is what caused the GFI to trip and the wires came off when I remove it from the housing. Any ideas. Thank you.

TR, the loose thermostat wires didn't vibrate off, it's like you mentioned, they came loose when you were servicing the refrigerator, or they may have gotten moisture in the connector, and the ice caused the connections to expand and come off the terminals. Let the refrigerator run a few days, if the defrost timer is at fault, the problem it will reoccur.

Hello Jeanne, If the unit is not getting down to around 15°F in the freezer compartment, this is the issue. The icemaker cannot cycle if the temperature is too high. You need to check for a frost build-up on the back wall of the unit which would indicate a defrost issue. R0161088 is the most common cause of this issue.

Glen, With this issue of the unit not cooling properly you will first want to determine if there is a defrost issue. To find out you will need to pull the rear wall in the freezer and check the evaporator coils to see if they are completely frozen up. If they are then you will want to do a continuity test on the heater and the defrost thermostat. If both have continuity then replace the defrost control. To access this you will need to pull the control housing in the refrigerator section.

Mike, Based on the information it sounds like the contacts in the thermostat are sticking since the timer has already been replaced. You would want to replace the thermostat

Hello Moe, This is more likely to be the defrost thermostat WP10442411 but can also be due to the coils needing to be cleaned or air flow restricted around the unit or the defrost timer. The timer would not be the first suspect in this complaint. You need to make sure the evaporator fan motor WP12013209Q can be stopped and will start back up to full speed on its' own.

Hello Jay, Remove the toe grille. You will find the timer box mounted in front of condenser, just left of center.

Charles, This issue will be caused by a faulty defrost thermostat. The evaporator fan will not work on this unit unless the defrost thermostat is closed.

Muscles614 for Model Number Amana ARB2107AS

I have an Amana ARB2107AS bottom freezer refriegerator which was not cooling in the fresh food section. based on the information on site i narrowed down the issue to either the defrost timer or the thermostat i ordered both the parts to replace them. after i removed the thermostat i noticed that the connector of the existing thermostat is round and the new one is flat. hence the existing connection can not be connected to the new thermostat. is it a wrong part or is there any other way to connect my order number is 4305019

1 Answer

Muscles, You would just want to cut the connector off either wire and strip a little of the wire and can connect with a butt connector or wire nut. When you get the connector on the part use a dab of silicone to seal the ends so that moisture does not get in it.
