The Oven Igniter is an OEM part for Whirlpool ovens. It is designed to ignite the gas in the oven burner, providing the heat necessary for baking or broiling. This igniter is critical for the oven’s functionality, as it must heat up to a specific temperature to open the gas valve and begin the combustion process.

Symptoms of a bad Oven Igniter include:

  • The oven failing to heat up despite the gas being turned on.
  • A gas smell indicating that gas is being released without ignition.
  • Intermittent heating, where the oven fails to maintain a consistent temperature.

Causes of a bad oven igniter can include aging and wear that reduce the igniter’s ability to reach the required temperature, electrical issues such as faulty wiring or connections, or a malfunctioning safety valve that doesn’t open properly.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Oven Igniter (Part Number: OEM18041961)

1 Answer

John, You will want to test the oven safety valve from Center post to bake terminal and make sure that there is 216 ohms of resistance. If this checks ok then check to make sure that the igniter is sparking by doing a visual check. If there is no spark then this would most likely be caused by a faulty Spark module.

Phillip, With the DSI Spark module having been replaced, this issue would most likely be caused by a faulty control board which is part number WPW10348710.

Clement, This unit uses a spark module board which will control both the top and the oven but on different circuits. If the igniters are sparking in the oven but not lighting then the safety valve would most likely be the issue. If there is no spark then you would want to test at the clock and make sure that there is power being sent to the spark module for the igniters to come on. If there is power then it would be a issue with the spark module.

Hello David. This is normal operation. The flame comes on and then turns off to regulate the heat in the oven. Even during the preheat cycle. It will not turn on and stay on.

Need help troubleshooting problem with oven that will not ignite. Stove top burners work fine. When oven is turned on to bake there is no gas flowing to bottom burner and the spark igniter does not fire. When oven is turned on to broil there is a kind of loud click that happens twice but nothing else happens. My guess is that this click is the oven switching the valve over to the top burner? Anyway, I do not hear the igniters fire on either burner and don't believe that gas is flowing through either of them. Any idea what the problem could be?

Hello Josh. Try cleaning the unit and if it continues, replace the gas safety valve on the unit.

Chris, It would be recommended to test the oven safety valve for 216 ohms of resistance. If it checks ok then the issue will most likely be in the spark module causing the unit to not light.

Hello Jacob. If the unit lites and then goes out, you will need to make sure the burner is clean and the gas pressure is good. If so, then it sounds like the control board WPW10331686 that provides the power to the gas valve is bad and will need to be replaced.

Dave, A model number would be a big help to assist you, but If you have a "spark igniter" on your oven, You will need to check or replace the oven gas valve. The igniter should spark and attempt to light the burner, after several attempts if the module doesn't recognize a change in the path to ground the module should shut itself down, and not operate until the control is reprogrammed. If you have a "glow bar" igniter igniter, does it glow "white hot" or bright red or orange ? The glow bar needs to glow "white hot", and/or draw 3.2 to 3.6 amps in order to activate the bi metal switch inside the oven gas valve, and release and ignite the oven burner gas. A weak igniter will produce the effects as you described in your post.
