The Oven Igniter is an OEM part for Whirlpool ovens. It is designed to ignite the gas in the oven burner, providing the heat necessary for baking or broiling. This igniter is critical for the oven’s functionality, as it must heat up to a specific temperature to open the gas valve and begin the combustion process.

Symptoms of a bad Oven Igniter include:

  • The oven failing to heat up despite the gas being turned on.
  • A gas smell indicating that gas is being released without ignition.
  • Intermittent heating, where the oven fails to maintain a consistent temperature.

Causes of a bad oven igniter can include aging and wear that reduce the igniter’s ability to reach the required temperature, electrical issues such as faulty wiring or connections, or a malfunctioning safety valve that doesn’t open properly.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Bert, With this issue, If the igniter is sparking then it will most likely not be the cause of failure unless the igniter insulator is cracked. This issue would most likely be caused by a faulty spark module but you will want to also check the resistance of the safety valve to ensure that it is good. The valve should have a 216O resistance reading from the bake to common and from broil to common. If there is not the proper resistance then replace the oven safety valve.

Joseph, You will want to check the oven safety valve to make sure that it is good. Test for 216 ohms of resistance from bake to common and from broil to common. If the resistance is not correct then replace the oven safety valve.

Dave, there are lot's of possibilities, first is the range on Natural gas or LP gas. You may have fluctuating pressure to the range. check and make sure the range power cord is plugged into a properly polarized and grounded, 120 VAC outlet. Check the wiring at the gas valve, igniter and spark module. If all's OK, suspect a weak or faulty solenoid on the gas valve/regulator assembly WPW10602001.

Hello Sherri, If the components are all getting the proper voltages at the proper times, the gas valve is the most likely culprit. This would explain the intermittence of the problem. I'm sorry but we will need the model number to see what configuration you have for a more detailed diagnostic procedure.

Eric, You'll need to check or replace the gas valve WPW10293048. The gas valve has three terminals, the center terminal is the "common" circuit. From the center terminal to each outer terminal you should have a resistance of 215 ohms with the wires disconnected. with the wires reattached, and a bake cycle programmed you should read 8 to 18 volts DC across the orange and red wires from the DSI spark module. You should also have 8 to 18 volts DC across the orange and blue wires when broil is selected. If all checks OK, replace the gas valve.

Baker Gal, You will want to do a resistance check on the oven sensor to make sure that it is good. The resistance should be 1090 ohms at room temp. If the resistance checks ok then the issue will be in the control board and the control will need to be replaced. The part number for the control board is WP5760M185-60.
