Causes of a bad ice maker can include worn components that affect its ability to properly freeze water, malfunctions in the electronic control board that regulate the process, or issues with the supply line.

Symptoms of a bad ice maker include:

  • Failure to produce ice cubes
  • Incorrect sized or shaped ice
  • Excessive noise during operation
  • Water in the freezer

This OEM replacement part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Icemaker (Part Number: OEM18113580)

Tom for Model Number MFI2269VEM10

I replaced both the water valve and the ice maker unit in this refrigerator, the replacement was because it was making ice but als running water into the bottom on the ice storage bin and freezing into a large chuck of ice. After replacing these items I still have the same problem and water dripping from the storage bin onto the outside tray. What do I need to do to make a repair? I also replaced all of the water filters at the same time. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Tom, There would have to be a frozen fill tube where it sprays water instead of running water into the ice maker. Or possibly the rubber end on the fill tube is damaged. There really wouldn't be another explanation.

Craig, the ice maker W10882923 does have both wiring harnesses and the motor. In regards to the ice build-up, the door chute should be inspected for an air leak.

Hello Walter, it sounds like the water valve is allowing water to drip into the unit even when the icemaker is not needed any. You can verify this by looking to see if you can see it dripping in, hope this helps!

Hello Kirk, for ice making here are the checks. Check if the left side refrigerator door is depressing the liner mounted interlock switch when the door is closed. Then check the temperature around the ice maker is staying below 15 deg and the ice fan behind it is running. If all checks ok then the part you jumped out T-H is the thermostat in the ice maker. It would indicate the thermostat is erratic.

Craig for Model Number Whirlpool WRX735SDHZ

I have a Whirlpool WRX735SDHZ that I replaced the original ice maker after about 18 months when it stopped making ice. The replacement was another original (no wire harness) and that worked for about another year before ice production slowed to about 1-2 trays per day (rather suddenly). I purchased another ice maker, W10882923, that I had to replace it and the entire harness (Type B?). After install the ice production was still slow at about 2 trays per day. I have also replaced the water filter with no results. If I bring the freezer temp down to -5 instead of the recommended 0 degrees, I get some increase in production but not as it should be. Fridge and freezer temps are fine (my ice cream is rock solid). It is almost as if the fan stopped working and the cubes only freeze from residual cold though I feel cold air from the vent on the side of the unit inside the fridge.

Craig, I'm sending you a service sheet. Follow directions to enter the service diagnostic mode and enter service test 37. This thermistor is in the ice box and could be reading false. Also do test 36 and feel if the air is moving in the ice box.

Alfredo Tinoco, i would change out the icemaker first, there is a new kit for this model that comes with a newly designed icemaker and a wire harness. There have been some issues with this icemaker stalling out during the fill cycle and causing a over fill condition.

Eric for Model Number MFX2570AEM0

I'm having an issue with the ice maker on this Maytag refrigerator. The unit was intermittently making ice and now has stopped. The tray does not have any water in it. Is there a diagnostic test I can do to tell if the ice maker needs to be replaced or it's an issue with the valve (have attempted to defrost ice is not the issue). Also if the unit needs to be replaced my ice maker is part number w10377151 which looks to have been replaced by the wpw10882923 you guys have. The end of the ice maker is different. Does this require a new wiring harness to be installed?

1 Answer

Hello Eric, In most cases, if the icemaker stops working with the ice mold empty, there is an issue with the water valve. In the cases where the icemaker stops empty and the icemaker is at fault, the issue is with the contacts in the icemaker that send the voltage to the water valve. This can be tested by forcing a cycle and checking for 120Vac at the water valve for the 6 to 7 seconds near the end of the icemaker cycle. If the voltage is present at the end of the cycle, the water valve is at fault.

Hello Hilario, This sounds like the icemaker W10882923 has failed as you suspected. Be aware that this is a kit designed to correct an issue identified by the manufacturer and the instructions have to be followed exactly for the new unit to operate properly. One of the new harnesses has to be used with this unit for normal operation to occur.

Hello Jim, You will normally use the original icemaker harness since there are so many configurations. The manufacturer will normally only include one or two possible configurations so the original on in the unit now should be used. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.
