Steve June 21, 2012 for Model Number TAWS800JQ1 Washer will fill with water and stop. After the water shuts off I can hear the timer ticking and also a light humming sound. I have checked lid switch and it is OK. I ordered a timer and that was not the problem. I checked the the motor and trans. they both turn free. What do you think I should check next. Thanks, Steve
1 Answer Hello Steve. Check and make sure the lid strike WP358684 is not broke, and when you close the lid it is closing the switch to turn the motor on and run. Steve June 18, 2012 for Model Number Whirlpool Estate TAWS800JQ1 Earlier I ask a question in reguards to my washer humming and the timer making a clicking or ticking sound after it satisfied the water level. I performed the trouble shooting tastes that you suggested: Checked lid switch, it was OK...was able to turn the motor and gearbox freely, so that checkout OK...You then suggeted it was probably the timer. Is there a way to checkout the timer before I purchase one, it is making a the clicking or ticking sound. By the way, you do have a very nice web sight, it is easy to use and the parts breakdown for each unit is very well defined. Thanks for your help so far, and hope there is possibly a way to troubleshoot a timer. Steve
1 Answer Hello Steve, The ticking and clicking sound is normal. This is the timer motor advancing the timer. The contacts in the timer is the part of the timer in question. If a set of contacts stick and voltage is supplied to the motor on more than one terminal at the same time, this situation can occur or the motor can periodically start and overheat, tripping the motor overload. The technical sheet should be in the control panel. This is used to determine which contacts are open and shut and where the voltage is being sent. The way I would recommend to look for the trouble is to ground one lead of your test meter and use the other to test for ac voltage. Check for ac voltage at the motor contacts with the unit in the run position. When it get to the point that it hums, check for the voltage on the orange, blue, and red wires. If there is voltage on more than one of these terminals, the timer is probably to blame. You can use the time chart to determine exactly which one has voltage that isn't supposed to have it. The only problem I have is it won't agitate hard enough. It has five different speeds, but it stays on low speed even if you switch it to a higher speed. It has a new clutch. 1 Answer Hello Bob. It sounds to me as though the motor is getting 120Vac from two sources at once when it should only get it from one at a time. Many times this is due to a fabric selector switch failure. Either WPW10150079 or WPW10168257. I say either or because the rotory switches are not labeled on the diagram so you should refer to the diagram for the switch location. It is called different names on different models but it will be the switch that determines wash speed and agitation speed. This can be a tricky diagnosis as the complaint can be caused by anything in the circuit including the wiring harness 3957363, the motor WP8529935, the motor capacitor WP8572720 or the timer WP8557393. My suggestion is to use the wiring diagram normally found behind the control panel and refer to this link for test meter use: You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Chad January 30, 2012 for Model Number 110.28922790 Washer fills with water, then sometimes agitates, but sometimes not. When it doesn't, I used to be able to turn timer to drain, drain just a little water, turn back to wash and it would start working. Now I have to drain most of the water to get it to start agitating. After doing this, I've tried to reset water level to desired amount, but it won't start agitating again after it refills. If I get it to agitate by draining most of the water out (hardly enough water left to do a tiny load), let it run through the rest of the cycles normally, start timer back to beginning of a normal wash, then it will work normally that time around, and for the next several washes (maybe 5 or so). I Have switched out the timer, and it behaved the exact same way. I have tested water level pressure switch with ohm meter and seems to be working fine. Could the motor start switch cause this bizarre behavior? Oh yea, once in a great, great while it won't spin. When it chooses not to agitate (or spin) the only noise you hear is the very faint clicking of the timer. Thank you in advance for any help!
1 Answer Hello Chad. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the pressure switch W10339326 is bad and will need to be replaced. 1 Answer William, First check and make sure you have at least 108 VAC at the outlet, when the motor starts and is running. Low voltage can cause the motor to overheat and trip the overload inside the motor. Also check and make sure there's no small articles, stuck under the agitator. Jim December 23, 2011 for Model Number 110.20722990 Washer agitates at the same speed regardless of speed setting, (handwash, delicate, reg, HD.) The lo spin works on handwash and delicate. Spin has a clicking sound on reg and HD. The spin cycle on handwash and delicate works and then I can turn the speed switch to reg and HD for the hi spin. I changed the timer, lid switch, clutch. Tony December 17, 2011 for Model Number Whirlpool LA5558XTW2 My washer fills but intermittently (increasingly) does not agitate. Most of the time if you move the agitator or the drum by hand, this will start the machine working. Once it starts, it completes the cycle fine (agitate/rinse/spin). The timer has been replaced and goes through its cycle fine. The lid switch is currently bypassed. Since it spins fine (even with heavy loads), I am thinking the clutch is okay.
