D December 06, 2012 for Model Number gs5shgxlq01 My side by side fridge stopped cooling last night. Fridge is running. I took back bottom cover off, no wire damage. Coils and fans all clean (I clean 4-6x per year regularly) Compressor is pretty hot to the touch. Starter (?) on side of compressor clicks on, then off after 5-10 seconds. Is the starter my problem? Thanks

Steve October 03, 2012 for Model Number ED5RHEXMT00 Had to replace comp. start device (WPL 8201786) - fried - and now filter light flashing on and off (hear defrost cntrl bd). Note condenser fan turned on prior to replacement and had airflow in frig. Examined defrost cntrl bd - looked fine - and replaced only comp. start relay. Any ideas - replace defrost cntrl bd? Thanks
1 Answer Steve, if you have attempted to reset the water filter system (Style 1: Press the light switch 5 times within 10 seconds. The status light will change from red to green. Style 2 : Press and hold the water filter reset button until the status light turns green. Your reset button may be located on the water dispenser or on the control panel in the refrigerator compartment." Then yes, you will need to replace the control board WPW10366605. Thanks Read More...
John June 19, 2012 for Model Number Whirlpool ED5CHQXKQ01 My refrigerator is not cooling. I get a click, hum, click near the compressor. From reading here, it sounds like it may be one of these parts. Can you please tell me the difference between Compressor starting device - AP3083556 and Compressor starting device kit - AP3885081. I talke to the sale chat, but they couldn't tell me which one I would need and suggested I ask here.
1 Answer John, It does sound like a start device issue. Either start device will work on your unit, but your best bet would probably be the WP4387835 . The 8201786 would require you to "e tip"and reposition wires. it was originally designed as a replacement device for a replacement compressor, and you should verify the compressor motor windings are correct and have proper resistances. Bohdan June 07, 2012 for Model Number Sub-Zero model 690 Is this starting relay will work for a sub-zero compressor refrigerator? What caused the starting relay to brake?
1 Answer Hello Bohdan. Sorry, but we do not offer parts for Sub Zero and have no way of knowing if this starting device WP4387835 will work on the unit. Read More...
Techman_Hou May 31, 2012 for Model Number 106.58582892 I am putting this overload kit on fridge, but do not recall where the small plastic "V" piece goes. Any direction or photos available?
1 Answer Hello. The plastic v part is not used on all models and is only used to secure the cover onto the side of the compressor. It does not affect the compressor operation. Read More...
John May 18, 2012 for Model Number 106.53652300 Continuing with my prior question about infrequent starting and stopping of cooling on my Kenmore refrigerator after initially having a freezing up problem. I thought your answer was very informative. Answering your question about lights and fans. All are working fine. I do have a question about part AP 3083556. Is this the part that the run capacitor would plug into on the compressor? I recently unplugged the capacitor to look at it after removing the hook wire holding it. Didn't look at the other part closely but as I remember it had a pointed arm coming off of it that the capacitor having a ring slid on to plug into this other part. Would this be the same replacement part that I would need but just look a little different? Also, does this just plug into the compressor prior to the capacitor plugging into it? I didn't try to remove it when I removed the capacitor so I not sure about that. One last note: I just checked the fridge again after being plugged in for a couple of hours and the evaporator coil is again frosting up. This thing is driving me crazy.
1 Answer Hello John. The new kit WP4387835 does not use the capacitor for the unit. You install the kit and bypass the capacitor. Read More...
John May 16, 2012 for Model Number 106.53652300 Freezer coil was frozen. Thawed refrigerator and replaced thermostat. Would not cool after that. Replaced new thermostat with old one and initially would not cool. Unplugged and replugged it a few times after waiting from one hour to a couple of hours. All of a sudden coils were frosting up. Unplugged to replace with new thermostat and replugged to discover it was not cooling again. replaced new with old thermostat and still no cooling. Waited a couple of hours and opened the freezer to discover coils were frosting up again. Unplugged for a couple of minutes to tape up wire connections and leave old thermostat wired in. Plugged back in and discovered it was not cooling again. Prior to replacing thermostat the only problem I had was that it would freeze up . Now it doesn't want to cool at all. I thought about replacing the defrost timer and the start relay but not sure what to do at this point.
1 Answer Hi John. The defrost thermostat part # WPW10225581 can be tested by inserting it in a glass of ice water. After a few minutes it should be a closed contact. Test it with a ohm meter and it should read 0-ohms (closed). It also has to open at a certain temperature (approx.45°) to be considered to be good as well. If you purchased the thermostat from us we will stand behind it 100%. Unfortunately as it don't happen hardly at all a man made electrical device can be bad. It also sounds like a loose wire as well because of movement in and out of the system or in moving the unit. Are the fans and lights going when it is not frosting up ? The control board sounds defective part # 8201527. If it does start up and frost builds up then the sealed system is working. If you are hearing a heavy audible click every few -to- 30 seconds by the compressor then by all means the compressor relay part # WP4387835 or the compressor windings are an issue. Make sure the condenser coils are clean so the cond.fan does its job well and you are not boiling the freon. Thank You. Read More...
Joe March 09, 2012 for Model Number Whirlpool ED5CHQXKB00 I just received a start relay AP3083556 and it has 1 prong protruding on one part and the other has 3 prongs. My old start relay had one prong protruding on the bottom piece and only 2 prongs on the top piece. The whirlpool has two ivory colored wires spliced together going to one prong. Am I able to use this new start relay and wire it correctly?
1 Answer Hello Joe. This should be no problem for you at all. You see, the original start relay that has 2 terminals on one side of it are actually the same point electrically. If you look close at the old one, you can see that the 2 spade connections are actually made on one solid piece of metal. It will cause no problem at all. Have a great day! Read More...
Mike February 23, 2012 for Model Number Kenmore side by side refrigerator 106.53604202 What is the difference between part ap3083556 and part ap3885081?
1 Answer Mike, both WP4387835 and 8201786 are relay/overload kits used on your Kenmore refrigerator. The compressor starting device kit part number 8201786 is a kit with two different overloads and two different relays with the wire jimper and instruction sheet to help verify which parts will fit on your product. The compressor starting device kit part number WP4387835 comes with one overload and relay. Thanks. Read More...
