For Whirlpool Refrigerator Relay And Overload Kit (Part Number: OEM18027969)

Bill for Model Number Gs6shaxkt01

My refrigerator and freezer is not getting cold. The fan is working and the compressor seems to go on and then after 20 seconds there is a click and it stops. Then there is a pause for 30 or so seconds and the compressor clicks and tries to go on and then goes off and the cycle starts over. I was wondering if this sounds like the the start relay? I took the start relay off and it rattles when I shake it. So, I think it is bad, but I don't want to order a new one if it is a compressor problem. Do the compressors go bad often? Thanks Bill

1 Answer

Bill, Compressors do "go bad", but not that often, Unless there is some type of power supply issue. Based on your information, you do want to begin at the start relay device. You most likely have the original, "production" compressor, so you will need the 8201786 Start Device Kit.

Sarafina, If your compressor relay has 3 wires going to it and is a square box then you will want to get part number 8201799 which has the jumper wire. This wire will connect to the units white wire and then to the relay. If the existing wiring is just 2 wires that connect to a relay and separate overload then you would use part number WP4387835.

Hello The compressor on my Whirlpool side-by-side quit working and I smelled burnt plastic. I pulled the starter relay and it is badly burned and the capacitor that plugs into it shows exterior damage from the overheated relay. I assume I should replace the capacitor as well. Correct? The capacitor (I assume it is a capacitor) is a black box approx. 2.25" X 1.25" X .75". Is a capacitor included in with the starter kit? Or do I have to purchase that separatey? If so, do you sell a replacement capacitor? My real concern is that the compressor is bad but I first want to try replacing these parts to see that will fix it. Thanks

Bill, The capacitor for the unit is part number WPW10662129. Replacing the start relay, overload and capacitor would be the parts to replace.

Chad, The red wire will connect to the overload which is the white piece with a single terminal. The White wire will connect to the brown relay. If there is a second white wire it will also connect to the relay.

Hello Ian. It is best to order and replace the compressor starting kit 8201786 for the unit. It comes with all the starters for the unit.

Hello Roger, The wiring should be as such, red wire goes to the white overload and the white wire to the relay. If there are 2 terminals on the relay put the white wire on the right side as you look at it as it is to be installed.

Paul for Model Number ED22QFX

Had a couple of inches of water in our basement where our 2nd refrigerator is located. It is no longer cooling or freezing. The power is still working and the fan appears to be blowing but not really cool air. Have tried resetting it with cooler off switch and unplugging it but doesn't seem to work. I don't hear a clicking sound I've heard mentioned and the compressor doesn't seem hot. Unfortunately the water issue has happened several times but the refrigerator has alway made it through before. Any suggestions as to what may have been affected - compressor relay switch, compressor? Or where I should start looking? I'll try and deal with the basement flooding. Thanks for any suggestions Paul

1 Answer

Hello Paul, The most likely victim of the flood is the start device 8201799. Of course, any electrical component submerged in water, (especially salt water), is susceptible to failure and should not be connected to the power supply and left unattended. I would suggest, if the flooding is a normal occurrence, to either unplug the unit to eliminate a fire hazard or stack a couple of pallets and put it up on them if this will get the unit above the flood level.

Hello John, It is not recommended to plug unit into a GFCI. Try plugging into an outlet that is not GFCI and see if it operates. If not then you will want to do an amp draw on the red wire that goes to start relay. Amp draw should be no higher than 8.5amps. If you are drawing higher than that then your compressor would be causing the overload.
