The Start Switch is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool dryers. It is an electronic component responsible for initiating the heating elements and tumble cycles upon user command from the control panel.

Causes of a bad start switch involve general wear over extended use. Failure of the internal conducting surfaces interrupts circuit activation as well.

Symptoms of a bad start switch include:

  • Heating elements or tumble cycles that will not engage properly
  • Dryer fails to operate or stops mid-cycle unexpectedly
  • Control panel appears non-responsive to selections
  • Error codes related to ignition or power delivery faults

Note: This dryer push-to-start switch has 2 terminals.

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore electric dryer models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Start Switch (Part Number: OEM18025032)

1 Answer

Hello Ivan, The push-to-start switches that have three terminals are actually relays and I do not believe they can be replaced with a two terminal switch. Since this is a Kenmore and we cannot access their closed computer system to pull wiring diagrams and technical information, I would assume from the information I can gather that the replacement part listed by Sears is incorrect. I would assume that the correct part would be more like WP3398094. This is a three-connection relay switch that would operate properly if it will mount to the control board. The only other suggestion would be to contact the manufacturer and see if they can research the part to ensure it is not a bad cross.

Hi T.A. It sounds like a normal aged dryer motor failure. Part # 279827. Make sure that you check the belt by folding it backwards as you will see if the inner ribs have cracked. This will also be the oppertune time to change the belt part # 341241. Make sure that the entire vent system is not kinked or clogged. Make sure the outside vent cap is operating correctly also. Thank You.

Hello Stephanie. If you press the switch and the unit starts, but when you let go it stops, you will need to replace the motor, not the switch. The contact in the motor are bad and it will need to be replaced. Hope this helps.

Nichole for Model Number REX4625EW1

A while back I had a paperclip stuck in the dryer drum. It prevented it from turning. I got it out and it was fine. During this time, when the drum didn't move, the timer made a rrr..rrr..rrr.. noise...like it wanted to work but couldn't. However, once I removed the paperclip from the drum everything went back to normal. 6 months later. Now the dryer started stopping mid cycle sometimes, but other times it would run all the way through and the clothes would be dry. Now the timer is making that noise again on certain settings but not others (60 min. cycle but not auto timer) and when you push the button it won't do anything anymore. I can't get it to turn on at all now. Im baffled cause none of the troubleshooting guides explain any of this exactly. Thanks for the help.

Hello Nichole. You will want to check the thermal fuse WP3392519 and make sure it is good. It should read closed for continuity. If it is good, go to the start switch WP3395382 and make sure it is closing when the switch is pressed. If so, you will need to replace the timer WP3976568. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. Hope this helps. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
