The Drain Pump Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This component is responsible for efficiently removing water from the washer's tub during the drain cycle. It plays a crucial role in ensuring that the washing machine operates smoothly by pumping out dirty water, thereby preparing the machine for the rinse and spin cycles.

Over time, drain pumps can become clogged or fail due to debris build-up, wear and tear from regular use, or electrical malfunctions. When the drain pump is compromised, it can lead to water drainage issues, affecting the overall performance of the washing machine.

Symptoms of a bad drain pump assembly include:

  • Water not draining from the washer
  • Unusual noises such as grinding or humming during the drain cycle
  • The washer stopping mid-cycle or displaying error codes related to drainage
  • Visible leaks from the pump area

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Drain Pump Assembly (Part Number: OEM18025986)

Jim for Model Number mav8057aww

I've noticed that in the previous questions when someone has a grinding noise near the pump you direct them to the thrust bearing. I am having a grinding noise as well at the pump pulley. This is not at the transmission pulley. I have already replaced the idler pulley at the motor and noticed that when I spun the pump pulley there was grinding along with thin metal casing exposed above the pulley which seems to make the noise. Do I need to replace the whole pump, or am I missing the purpose of the thrust bearing kit?

1 Answer

Hello Jim. If the bearing is out on the pump, you will need to replace the pump assembly WP35-6465. The thin metal casing is the pump bearing housing. Hope this helps.

Hello Robb! You will need to check the drain pump and the thrust bearing 12002213. We will need your serial number to determine the correct drain pump part number. Thanks.

Ok, I have read some of the questions and answers and mine has combination to all. Washer will go through the wash cycle and stops when it's time to drain for the rinse cycle. I have drained the water and run the washer with no clothes in it and it spins fine. There is a noise underneath around where the water pump is. My thought was to replace the water pump, but when I took the belt off, it spun boths ways without hesitation, so I'm not sure if that's the problem. But the "grinding like" noise still has me concerned. I did smell something the first time after we discovered it was working, but it worked through a wash cycle after that.

Hello Don. Here are the steps for removing the front panel. Grasp the front edge of the top of your machine and simply lift up. No tools are required. The top is hinged at the back and will lift up like a clam shell. Lift all the way up and rest the lid on the wall behind the machine. Locate the two Phillips screws on the top inside edge of the front panel. There is one screw at each corner of the top of the front panel on the inside of the machine. Remove these screws and keep them safe. Tip the front panel toward you just a little and then wiggle it slightly and lift up. The panel will pull up until it clears to J-shaped clips near the bottom of the panel. Hope this helps.

I'm afraid I may have to replace the water pump and the belt however, before I order the parts I have some questions: 1. In the schematic diagram I see a "water valve" but I believe that controls the incoming cold and hot water. What keeps the water in the tub from draining during the wash or rinse cycles. I saw a plastic pipe from the tub to the pump and from the pump out to drain but I don't see any valve. 2. To replace the pump I may have to remove the front panel. How do I remove the front panel?

1 Answer

Hello Don. The water valve is the water inlet that fills the machine. There is not a water valve for the pump itself. When the washer goes into a drain, the direction of the motor reverses which activates the pump. Hope this helps.

I'm having periodic problem with the washing machine shutting off with the tub still with water or the clothes still soaking wet. After reading your previous threads, few questions dawned on me. (1) You mentioned that this is a high volume pump. Does the pump run all the time? (2) Is there a drain valve that prevents the water from draining during wash as well as rinse cycles? (3) Should I hear a steady rush of water out the drain hose from the start to the end of the drain cycle?

1 Answer

Hello Don. First check the thrust bearing 12002213 and make sure it is working properly and is not worn or broken. The pump runs when the motor is in the spin mode. It does run through the entire spin cycle. If the tub is not spinning properly, the water will not drain all the way out. See if the thrust bearing is your problem. Hope this helps.

William, Yes it's possible to have a noisy pump. There are other possibilities you may want to try and isolate the location of the noise. For a better diagnosis first. You need a putty knife, insert the knife in the seam between the top and front panel. Press in on the hidden spring clips and lift up on the top top raise it. Remove the screws securing the front panel to the washer frame and lift up and off the lower tabs. You will then have access to the internal parts and can repair/repalce the part making the noise. Good Luck!

Hello Jim. Check the lid switch and see if it is broken. This can cause the washer to stop at rinse cycle. Hope this helps.

Hello J. Remove the belt from the bottom of the washer. Turn the thrust pulley by hand and see if the transmission 35-6615 is binding. If it is ok, you probably have a bad motor. Hope this helps.
