The Drain Pump Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This component is responsible for efficiently removing water from the washer's tub during the drain cycle. It plays a crucial role in ensuring that the washing machine operates smoothly by pumping out dirty water, thereby preparing the machine for the rinse and spin cycles.

Over time, drain pumps can become clogged or fail due to debris build-up, wear and tear from regular use, or electrical malfunctions. When the drain pump is compromised, it can lead to water drainage issues, affecting the overall performance of the washing machine.

Symptoms of a bad drain pump assembly include:

  • Water not draining from the washer
  • Unusual noises such as grinding or humming during the drain cycle
  • The washer stopping mid-cycle or displaying error codes related to drainage
  • Visible leaks from the pump area

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Drain Pump Assembly (Part Number: OEM18025986)

1 Answer

Hello Deana, It sounds like the drain pump may be your issue as long as you have checked to insure there is no lint and foreign object build-up in the hose before the pump. This also includes where the tub to pump drain hose leaves the tub because I have seen a wash cloth or childs' underwear in this area causing a similar complaint. As long as it's clear and the unit doesn't make a loud roar during the spin cycle, the drain pump WP35-6465 should take care of this problem.

Mike for Model Number MAV4057AWW

Hi, My washer first stopped spinning during all cycles except whites. About 1 month later, it now won't drain or spin in any cycles. I took the belt off and verified the motor spins when engaged in the spin cycle. With the belt still off, I turned the transmission drive pulley in the clockwise direction, which caused the agitator to move back and forth. Then I turned the transmission pulley in the opposite direction, the pulley did get harder to turn, and the tub did slowly spin, basically as I turned the pulley the tub made a rotation but kind of seemed tight (is it supposed to be?). I then rotated the pump and in either direction and it drags, makes a rubbing/grind sound. There was also a lot of belt dust around the pump pulley. Is my pump bad or my thrust bearings? Thanks, Mike

1 Answer

Hello Mike. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the thrust bearing is releasing the brake and is working properly. I would suggest you replacing the pump WP35-6465 and the belt WP22003483 on the unit.

Dawn for Model Number PAV3300AWW

I had a noise in my washer and when I checked it the pump was making the noise. The motor was also getting hot. I took the pump off and the pulley was real loose and it was dragging when I turned it.I was going to order a pump but I was wondering if the pulley was suppose to be loose on them and the sleeve was suppose to stick out. If I get a new one would it be the same. I called about one and they have changed them some what. They have done away with the plate on them. You think a pump would take care of it? Thanks!

1 Answer

Hello Dawn. Yes, based on the information you provided, it sounds like the drain pump assembly WP35-6465 is bad and will need to be replaced. Hope this helps.

Danny S for Model Number LNC6764A71

About the pump bearing: I asked about noise in a post from 1/2/12 and the answer said to check the pump for binding and if that wasn't the case to replace the thrust bearing. Since the pump turned easily enough by hand, I replaced the thrust bearing. The noise continued and agitation was slow to non-existent before stopping. Drain and spin worked most of the time with noise. When I look at the pump pulley I see the crimped metal sleeve sticking out like a petticoat about 1/4" above the top of the pulley hub. The pulley has some slight wiggle to it. Is that the problem? Can the hub be pressed back onto the crimped sleeve? Do I have a way of knowing that it's not a transmission problem?

1 Answer

Danny, to test the transmission, remove the belt, and turn the transmission drive pulley in the clockwise direction, that should cause the agitator to move back and forth. Turn the pulley the opposite direction, the pulley will get harder to turn, and the tub will start to spin(slowly) you should be able to hear or feel if threes an issue in the gearcase(transmission). But it sounds like you've got a drain pump issue, based on your post description. The impeller shaft is starting to seize up on the shaft, and causing a "drag" on the belt and motor. Thanks and Good Luck

Mr. Hunt, You could have something ( needle, pin, paper clip) in the pump or a worn out thrust bearing assembly. Those are the two most common "noise " issues with that style unit. You would want to slide the unit away from the wall, remove the front panel, " Insert a flat bladed tool(putty knife) between the top panel and front panel approximately 4 inches in from the front corners, press in on the blade and lift up on the front corners, to disengage the spring clips. Once to top is up and braced, remove the two 5/16 in. screws holding the front panel to the cabinet cross brace, tilt the top of the front panel out until the alignment pins are cleared, the lift up on the front panel to remove. Raise and block up the front of the washer, and remove the belt, turn the pump drive pulley and feel for a smooth even rotation of the pulley shaft assembly. if there's a "ratchetting " or clicking feel when you turn it, theres something in the pump . If the pump is operational, remove the plastic cap off the center of the transmission pulley, remove the "C" clip and remove the cam and pulley assemblt from the shaft and check for distorted or damaged parts. Thanks and Good Luck.

Hello Rodney. Make sure you have installed the pump WP35-6465 in the proper position. Also, check and make sure the thrust bearing 12002213 is releasing the brake assembly properly. You can test this by turning the pulley by hand and see if the brake releases. If it does not, you will need to replace the thrust bearing kit. Hope this helps.

Sheryl, Have you checked the drain pipe for a slow drain/backup yet, that could be a source of your leak. Based on your post, I would reccomend you remove the front panel of the washer( insert a flat bladed tool, putty knife in the seam between the top and front panel, approximately 3 inches in from the corner, press in on the tool and lift up on the top. lift up and out at the top of the front panel to release it from the bottom clips. Reposition the top proper and start the washer in a cycle. DO NOT REACH INTO THE WASHER WHILE IT IS RUNNING. I think you may find water leaking from the bottom center of the tub assembly, if so you will need W10219156 tubseal/bearing assembly, which would account for the lesak and the noise. Thanks and Good Luck
