The Temperature Sensor is an OEM part for Whirlpool ice makers. This sensor plays a crucial role in monitoring and regulating the temperature within the ice maker, ensuring that ice is produced at the optimal temperature and maintaining the efficiency of the ice-making process.

Causes of a bad ice machine temperature sensor can include normal wear and tear, exposure to moisture or temperature fluctuations, or electrical issues. A malfunctioning sensor can result in improper ice production, affecting the quality and quantity of ice.

Symptoms of a bad ice machine temperature sensor include:

  • Inconsistent or insufficient ice production
  • Ice maker not functioning at all
  • Ice cubes that are too small or misshapen
  • Error codes or alerts related to the ice maker

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

I recently clean my ice machine with the recommend solution. At first it would not make ice because the water would overfill the reservoir and drain water directly to the drain pump. The pump would then sense to over flow of water turn the unit off while pumping the water out and then the cycle would begin again. So I disconnected the drain form the pump and allowed to drain into a bucket. This worked to get the unit to create ice but the reservoir would still over flow. I then replace the water level sensor and still have the same problem with overfilling the reservoir. Is the water level sensor suppose to turn off at a certain lever of is this how the unit works?

1 Answer

Jesse, With the ice machine, even though the reservoir is full, the unit will continue to fill, this is to flush the tank and put fresh water in the unit. Once it fills for a certain length of time it will go into the cycle.

On my 2007 free standing ice maker by kitchen aid I ran its diagnostic test. It's a 10 step test. I did it manually AND I let the machine do it on its own by how the factory has programmed it to. ( you have an option) both times I had a problem on #4. The red light blinked and did not stay solid: blinking indicates problem. Doing the test manually I could finish the 10 cycle test which tests all the parts- still #4 was blinking=problem. Everything else looked fine. When I did the test again and let the kitchen aid ice maker do its diagnostic automatically at #4 the light was blinking indicating a problem, BUT then shut OFF the ice machine...? It did not complete the 10 step diagnostic test- Soooo that concludes step #4 on this machine is it problem... Ok what is it part???? ????

Hello Steven. Testing the water level sensor. Approximately 14VDC is supplied to the water level sensor through the black/white-brown at the connector. If approximately 14VDC is not present at the sensor, check the supply voltage at the main control board, terminal P8, pin 3 and 6. If voltage is present, then check the wire and connections. If voltage is not present, replace the main control board. When the sump is empty, approximately 0 VDC will display on the meter through yellow/red-brown at the water level sensor connector. When water is present in the sump, the meter will display approximately 5 VDC through yellow/red-brown at the water level sensor connector. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hello Kim, As bad as I hate to say it, the drain pump W11566407 has most likely failed again. The only other thing that will cause issues with the pump operation is if a hose is loose. If the clamps are all tight, check for a rupture in the hoses. If none are found, replace the drain pump.

This is a stand alone icemaker. I can hear the water running when the unit is started and it will go through a cycle but only produce a few pieces of ice. I found a broken wire on the cutting grid that the ice sheet falls onto to create the cubes but dont think this has anything to do with cubes not being produce. I want to know if it can be a thermostat or is there another sensor that may be not functioning to allow the ice to be made or could it be the compressor? Thank you

1 Answer

Hello Norman. The broken wire can be the reason. If the wire does not cut the ice, it will melt and not produce properly.

Hello Kris. Test and see if power stops to the valve, but the water continues to run. If so, the water valve is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Ken, If the wire has come loose from the connections then you can try to push the wire back into the center hole. If the wire will not stay in place then you will want to replace the sensor WPW10548509.

This ice maker is less than a year old and well maintained the unit would make ice for a day than not make anymore ice it keep the water moving , but when we took the the water sensor out of the water bath and wiped it down. It then ran again for a day then no more. I'm going to order water sensor. Everthing thing else checks out. Before the the ice maker would premature harvest. Go into defrost. Is this one of the problems with a bad water sensor. Thnxs any info would be a help. Thier is no tech support for maytag. What a waste of a product line , the cust bought it from Home Depot , called the support hot line they wouldn't cover warranty. They said its 2011. Now 2014. But receipt is dated 6 months ago from original purchase.

Bruce, Normally the water level sensor would not send the unit into defrost and would not have anything to do with dropping the ice too soon. This issue would most likely be caused by the evaporator thermistor.
