Starr, You do not have to have the tub emptied to change the lid switch but to drain the tub you would have to jump out the connections of the switch. If you take the screws out of the endcaps of the control, you will roll the control panel up. When you do this it will give access to 2 metal clips. Using a flatblade screwdriver pop the clips loose. Once the clips are loose you can take the cabinet off the unit in order to change the lid switch. If you need to jump out the terminals to get the unit to spin then you will put a insulated jumper with the tips stripped into the 2 outer terminals of the harness that goes to the lid switch and this will jump it out.

Heather, You will want to check the drain pump to make sure that the pump is not seizing up. If there is something inside of it then it can cause a slow spin and drain.

Daniel, Unfortunately without the model number we would not be able to provide any technical information on this unit. You can get into the control panel of the unit and get the tech sheet which should have information regarding the lock assembly. It sounds like this may be a control board model and if so put the unit into diagnostics and see if there are any stored error codes.

Wandasue for Model Number SAWS800JQ2

I call the Whirlpool 800 number and got it from the my washer. I wanted to order a black belt cause my washer can wash but it stop spinning because I over load and put too much blankets in the washer. When I talk to the guy he said my model number washer doesn't need a belt I told him the belt bust and had a guy took the back off and the belt broke. What do I do, guy said the model number I gave him doesn't carry a belt in the washer. I told him that's weird cause there was a belt that broke from the washer. What do I do. My washer can wash but it stop when it go to spin. Doesn't have power or anything to spin. Please help and it's been how many months I go without a washer and have to go to my mom's and wash clothes.

Wandasue, The model number that you have listed is considered a direct drive unit. This type of unit would not have a belt on it. If the motor is not getting power at the time the unit is supposed to spin then it would most likely be either a lid switch that is the issue or a bad timer.
