The Hi-Limit Thermostat is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the dryer operates at safe temperatures by cutting off power to the heating element if the dryer overheats. This safety mechanism helps prevent potential fires and damage to the appliance.

Common causes of a bad thermostat include normal wear and tear, exposure to excessive heat, or electrical malfunctions.

Symptoms of a bad hi-limit thermostat include:

  • The dryer not heating
  • The dryer overheating
  • The dryer shutting off unexpectedly during a cycle
  • Longer drying times

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Hi-Limit Thermostat (Part Number: OEM18024927)

Hello George. If the unit is shutting down, and you have to wait to start it, then the motor is bad and will need to be replaced. If only the heater shuts off, but everything else will run for the rest of the cycle, you will need to check the vent and the blower wheel and see if something is clogged. Hope this helps.

Hello Steve. You will need to check and see if the heating element is grounded out to metal on the unit. If so, you will need to replace the heating element. Hope this helps.

Two questions: 1) Explain what to do with the extra wire that comes with the thermostat cut off kit 279816 piece 312968. We didnt have a wire with our old one so were unsure if its to go to the element. For kicks we left the old one in and it works with several new parts we had, is that OK? 2) How hot is the dryer to get once complete? Our dryer, outside of where the thermostat was replaced, without the back screwed on, is too hot to touch. If touched you would burn your hand. Is this normal, as we wouldnt normally pay attention, due to the fact that the back of the dryer would be screwed on for protection?

Hello Dee. The wire is only use on certian models. If it is not needed on your model, it is ok. You will need to test the air temperature coming out of the back of the vent on the dryer. It should cycle between 110° and 155° +-10%. If it is with in range, the dryer is working properly. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter.
