This thermostat monitors temperature and opens or closes its electrical contacts to control and protect the appliance's heating circuit. Replacing a failed thermostat restores stable temperatures and helps prevent nuisance shutdowns or persistent no-heat issues. What it does:

  • Senses temperature at its mounting location and switches the circuit on/off as designed
  • Protects the heating system by interrupting power when temperatures exceed its rated limit
  • Helps maintain consistent operation when the original thermostat is stuck open/closed or out of calibration
  • Typical symptoms: no heat or intermittent heat, overheating/safety shutdowns, or failed continuity when tested cool
What's included:
  • 1 thermostat
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power (and shut off gas supply if applicable) before servicing
  • Note wire locations and transfer one at a time to the new thermostat
  • Mount securely in the original position to ensure proper temperature sensing
  • After installation, run a test cycle and monitor operation/temperature

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Thermostat (Part Number: OEM18026055)

Hello Joe, The only thing that will open a thermal cutout is high temperatures. The exhaust duct causes more than 95% of these failures. Other times it will be a softener sheet around the blower wheel or missing seals inside the unit that allows exhausted air to re-enter the cabinet. The cycling thermostat will not cause the second failure since it and the thermal cutout are to be changed at the same time so the new one should protect it. The high limit will also fall into this line of protection.

Mark, With having the heating element and 2 thermal fuses go out, you will want to check the venting on the unit to make sure that the vent is clear and not restricted. A restricted vent can cause this issue to occur. The Hi limit thermostat would normally have continuity and if the it does not open when the unit gets to a certain heat temp then it would be bad and need to be replaced.

Hello Shawn, The first suspect is the ignitor WP33002789. The only accurate way to test it is with a clamp on ampmeter. Clamp it onto one wire going to the ignitor and look for 3.2 to 3.6 amps. If it's low, replace the ignitor. If it shows in the correct range, you need to replace the coils on the gas valve 279834 or the gas valve WP35001190.
