  • Access the timer in the control console; remove the back cover, knob/retainer, and mounting screws as needed

For Whirlpool Timer (Washer) (Part Number: OEM18024174)

Michael for Model Number LA5700XSW1

Hi- My wife has been using the gentle cycle exclusively on the washer for more than 10 years straight. Recently, during the spin cycle, the clothes end up really soaked like the spin cycle did not get all the water out. I started using the normal cycle and the issue doesn't seem to happen. They spin down normally, with most of the water drained out. Would you think this is the timer that is causing an incomplete spin cycle or something else? Thanks

Hello Michael, This could have been something in the pump that has since gone on out with the drain water or the timer can in fact cause the issue. This could also be caused by a spin bearing that is beginning to seize. This would only be the case if the load that came out wet was the second or third load and the spin bearing was already heated up from the previous loads. Since heat causes the metal parts to expand, this would not normally happen with the first load when the bearing is in the early stages of failure.

KPB, to test your timer, you'll need to remove power to the washer, set the timer dial to the final spin cycle and pull out the knob. You'll need to use the timer cam chart to determine which contacts are "closed" in the spin cycle (ei : white/black wire to yellow wire in switch14 on cam 8) , you could insert your meter probes in the back of the harness connection, but it's best to unplug the harness connector and check the appropriate brass pins on the timer itself for a "closed" circuit.

Hello Sy. You need to check and see if the drive block WP389140 inside the unit is bad and will need to be replaced in the unit.

I am thinking a faulty timer; On normal, Sometimes The machine will fill and not agitate but completes the cycle, once had tub filled with water but went through the complete cycle. Then when I moved the dial to permanent press it went through the complete cycle with no problem. Next I started cycle on Heavy normal and it went through the complete cycle no problem. I have been using the normal cycle and it's been working just fine for the about a week. So the problem seems to be intermittent.

Hello Barb. Yes, if the unit only skips the agitate on certain cycles, it sounds like the timer WP3351744 is bad and will need to be replaced in the unit.

Hello Jim. I think I would check the cold water valve 285805. Actually I would check the screen in the cold water side of the valve first and check both ends of the cold water hose for screens. I would also make sure the cold water hasn't been turned off. I doubt there is an issue with the timer. Although it is possible, it isn't the most probable cause of your issue. I hope this helps you out! Have a great day!

Hi Ruary. If the timer will complete one cycle, then this says alot for the lid switch, transmission and motor. The timer is part # WP3351744. Thank You.

Andrew&Jerry, You want to start at the fill valve 285805. Turn the washer on and start a cycle. while the washer is filling, unplug the power cord, if the water continues to flow, you have a sticky solenoid. If the water stops, you'll need to check the water level switch 64103 and the air tube from the switch to the tub WP353244 it could clogged with deposits or debris. As long as you're sure you didn't cross wire the timer, you should be fine. Good Luck and Thanks
