This timer is the user-selectable control that advances cycles and powers timed functions on compatible laundry appliances. It replaces a worn or failed mechanical timer to restore proper cycle sequencing and timing. What it does:

  • Advances the control through wash/dry cycles and selected settings
  • Routes power to motors, heaters, and other timed components as the cycle progresses
  • Commonly used when cycles won't advance, the timer knob turns but nothing happens, or cycle timing is incorrect
  • Mechanical design — does not include a serviceable timer motor
What's included: One timer assembly Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before inspecting or replacing the timer to avoid shock or damage
  • Some models require removing the console or control panel for access; keep fasteners and wiring order documented
  • The timer motor is not a separately serviceable part; replace the complete timer assembly if the motor fails

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Timer (60 Hz) (Motor Not A Service Part) (Part Number: OEM18039228)

Scott for Model Number Lsn2000pw4

My washer fills, drains, spins but doesn't agitate in any wash or rinse cycle. Sometimes I can get it to fast agitate after I put it in extra gentle wash cycle, then switch to regular cycle. If I can get it to fast agitate, it will fast agitate and then slow agitate, drain, spin and fill for rinse, then not agitate. I have replaced the agitator shaft, transmission oil seal, water valve, clutch, neutral drain kit, agitator dogs, motor coupling and capacitor. After the washer fills, the timer advances and the motor sounds like it is running and is operating the agitator gears in the transmission, but doesn't drive the agitator shaft. Is there a test to verify the controls are supplying signal and sufficient voltage to the motor to drive the agitator? I wondered if the timer could have a dead spot where it would supply signal to the motor causing it to run but not with enough voltage/amperage to agitate.

Hello Scott. Take the cabinet off, then remove the pump and motor and the rubber coupling insert. Grab the part of the coupling that seats on the transmission and turn it manually both ways. It should spin one way and agitate opposite way. If it agitate grab the agitator to imitate the load. You may have there bad transmission or stripped agitator splines inside. Good lock.

Marvin, the motor coupling 285753A and clutch assembly 285785 would need to be inspected as they are the most common cause for a direct drive washer to not spin the clothes out fully.

Gary, try turning the timer to a spin cycle and see if it spins, if it does not spin, you may have a bad lid switch. If it does, make sure the water valves are good, if it is trying to fill with cold water during the rinse cycle and no water is going into the tub, you may have a bad inlet valve. Also, the timer could have a dead spot and is stopping at that position and would need to be replaced. Just some ideas to check before buying a timer WP8541270

Hello Jeramy. Check and see if the unit is only filling with hot water and not allowing in cold water. If so, you will need to make sure screens are not clogged and replace the valve if needed.

Hello Dave, This is probably a bad cycle switch (AP3688582). But you must realize there is the possibility the timer (AP3181958) could have an issue.

Hello Jay. Yes, if the contacts are stuck in the timer WP8541270, it can cause the issue you are having with the unit. Also, id the timer motor wire gets shorted and powers the timer motor, it can cause this issue as well.
