This mechanical cycle timer regulates the sequence and duration of the washer's programs. Replacing a worn timer restores proper cycle advancement, helping the machine start, progress, and complete wash, rinse, and spin stages as designed.

  • Sequences power to the drive motor, pump, and water valves through each stage of the cycle
  • Advances the internal cam and contacts to move the washer from wash to rinse to spin
  • Helps with: cycle not advancing or stopping mid-cycle; won't start on certain settings; no agitate or no spin in selected cycles; knob won't turn or feels loose
  • Mounts in the control console and interfaces with the cycle knob
What's included: One mechanical timer assembly. Install notes:
  • Unplug the washer before servicing
  • Open the control console; remove the knob/dial and the timer's mounting hardware
  • Photograph or label wiring; transfer leads to the new timer one at a time to matching terminals
  • Reassemble, ensure the knob indexes correctly, and run a test cycle

Mike, Yes, you are on the right track. This issue would be caused by a faulty timer if you pull the knob and the timer starts but stops when you release the knob.

http://www.appliancepartspros.com/answers-for-whirlpool-timer-22001252-ap4026232-question-112604.html I was finally able to get the washer tipped back enough to see the bottom and found the large pulley. I can turn the pulley with the belt on or off in either direction. I *think* the tub is turning, as it feels and sounds like something more is moving than just the wheel, but it is impossible for me to turn the pulley under the washer and look into the lid at the top of the machine at the same time Is there any way for me to tell if it is the drive belt that is worn out/too loose or if it is the motor before I order the part(s)?

1 Answer

Hello Ann. It is very unlikely the belt is causing the issue. If fact, it would run and not hum if it were the belt. It sounds like the motor is the issue with the unit.

Hello Ann. Lean the washer back and remove the belt from the pulley. The rotate the pulley by hand. Be careful and do not get your fingers caught in the pulley.

In regards to my previous question, I received the replacement timer and was able to install it without difficulty. However, now it just hums on ALL of the spin cycles without actually spinning the drum, whereas prior to installing the new timer, it only hummed on the delicate cycle spin, but was silent on all of the other spin cycles. Did I miss something in the installation process, or is there another bad part? thank you for your help & here is a link to my initial question prior to ordering the timer on Monday. http://www.appliancepartspros.com/answers-for-whirlpool-timer-22001252-ap4026232-question-112325.html

1 Answer

Hello Ann. Try turning the large pulley by hand and see if you can spin the drum manually. If not, you will need to see what has it locked down. If you can, then it sounds like the motor may have went bad as well.

I have a 1995 Maytag washer that stopped spinning out on all of the cycles except for delicate. I put off ordering a timer while the delicate cycle still worked for the last 4 months or so. Last night, the delicate cycle stopped working as well. The machine would fill on all of the other cycles, and proceed through (timer advanced) the cycle until finished, but would do nothing while in the spin section of each cycle (timer still advanced, but other than an occasional click, I'm assuming whenever the machine was going to do something different, and at the end when the spin cycle is shutting down). Last night, the machine filled and agitated without any trouble, but the machine was still full at the end of the delicate cycle and the dial had already moved past the spin cycle to the end. This morning, I syphoned out the water and then tried one more time to see if the spin would work. Instead of silence when I tried it last night on the delicate spin cycle, I heard a loud humming noise, as if perhaps the motor was trying to run, but nothing inside the machine was moving. It only made this noise on the delicate cycle spin section, as I tried each of the other cycles as well, but only had silence and no movement in the machine on those cycles. I had assumed that the timer had gone bad and needed to be replaced, but now with the loud humming, I am wondering if the motor is also going out, or if there are some additional parts I also need to check before ordering the timer and motor. Can you help me narrow down the problem parts and figure out which ones need to be tested and/or replaced? Thank you so much for your help!

Hello Ann. It sounds like the timer is bad and will need to be replaced in the unit. It can cause the motor to hum in the unit.

The main symptom of the washer machine is that the timer does not shutdown the power to the machine .The machine stays energized at all times. The second symptom is that the machine does not advance cycles.for example the machine fill accordingly , then it goes into agitation and from ther it does not go into any other cycle even when the timer is moving accordingly.it remains agitating, or spining.Curiously, if i move the timer manually when it is on agitation mode to the spin cycle and open the lid and close it again it goes into spin cycle but it does not stop when the timer has reach the off position. I went ahead and replace the timer , but the sypmtoms continue. I checked evry other component, the lid switch, the water vlave selenoids, the pressure swithch and everthing seems to be working as intended by the manufacturer. What i am missing?

1 Answer

Hello Pedro. If the timer is new, there has to be a wiring issue on the unit. You need to look for a loose or shorted wire on the unit.
