Causes of a malfunctioning washer drain pump assembly can include blockages from small items or debris, such as coins, socks, or lint, that accidentally make their way into the pump.

Symptoms of a bad Washer Drain Pump Assembly include:

  • Water not draining out of the washer, leaving clothes wet
  • Unusual noises coming from the pump area, indicating a blockage or damage
  • The washer stopping mid-cycle due to inability to drain
  • Error codes displayed on the washer related to draining issues

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Frieda C. for Model Number GHW9400PW4

My washing machine runs well at the beginning and in the middle of the cycle, it beeped and flashed the signal of F33. I have to cancel the cycle and drain all the water, then move to rinse and spin to continue. Then in the middle of it, it flashes F33 again. I then cancel again and drain the water. Then moving it to drain and spin, it will complete the cycle. I cleared out the filter but the problem still continues. Is it the pump that I need to replace?

1 Answer

Hello Frieda, The fault code F33 is explained on the tech sheet as follows: If after 30 seconds the control does not detect water entering machine, the valves will be turned off and the error code will be displayed. OR If the control has turned the water valves on and after 8 minutes the flow sensor has detected 10.5 gallons of water passing through it, but has not detected the pressure switch trip, the valves will be turned off and the error code will flash. Press PAUSE/CANCEL twice to clear the display. In light of this information I would make sure the water supply faucets are turned all the way on, the hoses are not kinked behind the unit, and no screens are stopped up from mineral deposits and/or sedimentation from the water supply. If these are all good, I would replace the water inlet valve WP8182862.

Ashley, The F21 error code is an indication of a drain problem ( F21 = Long Drain) the drain pump 280187 is the more common issue. But first check and make sure the drain hose from the drain pipe to the back of the washer isn't kinked or clogged, first.

Hello Confused. If the washer is shutting down and you have to restart it, it sounds like the CCU WPW10420115 is bad and will need to be replaced.

Kathy, With the unit draining when you hit the cancel button 2 times would indicate that there is a internal malfunction of the main control board.

J.S.

We are getting the F02 code that indicates a problem with draining. We've checked the drain hose, the little trap that runs between the drum and the pump, and we checked the little tube that connects to the pressure sensor, we are finding no obstructions. We also are feeling water pressure in the hose as the water exits the machine. It seems that water is draining out of the machine, but we are still getting the error message and water never fully empties from the machine. Before we order a pump, is there anything else we can do? This is a whirlpool duet front loader about 7 years old.

1 Answer

Hello J.S. No, if the hoses are clear, you will need to replace the pump on the unit.
