It provides the tension needed for the cup door to pop open at the correct time during the wash cycle to release detergent. Appeared to be two problems: the latch was worn and one of the pins that slid in a guide on the actuator located in the inner panel had broke off. Detergent lid spring and pin appeared to be OK but decided to replace since I was aready working on it. I ordered all the inner panel mechanism from the control arm to the latch actuator on the inner panel. The repair was successful as the detergent dispenser now opens during its cycle.

Once I located the parts involved in the factory exploded drawing I ordered a cable and spring. Then, when I had the dishwasher pulled out I saw that both cables had simply slipped off of their pulleys and that the door needed to be re-set properly into its drop-down metal studs.
So now I have a spare set for any problems in the future! Very easy - two screws under the counter and pull forward. Shipping was quick and easy. First time customer.
