Ice flapper door stopped closing Lawrence D. • Holly Springs , NC • March 21, 2016
My refrigerator is 13 yrs old and began to build up frost in the ice cube shoot and the water tube began to freeze up over night. The flapper door was not closing completely. I simply removed the control panel by pulling up and out on the bottom edge, the edge is only about 1/8 inch thick, so don't reach in to far. You should be able to feel a small division line between the control panel and the refrigerator. No screw driver was needed to expose the 4 mounting screws of the inner dispenser...

1) Remove toe kick panel - 2 Philips head screws
2) Lay down on floor. This might be the hardest part of the repair from some people!
3) Remove broken spring, no tool required.
4) Using your fingers, slip one end of new spring into hole on lever arm. (If you're not sure how it should go, look at the spring on the other door, assuming you have a side-by-side.)
5) Hook the other end of the spring around a round-shank screwdriver. (Don't even bother with pliers. You will disregard this advice...

Ice maker door not sealing causing frost buildup and leaking Richard B. • Shoreline , WA • October 11, 2016
I wasn't sure if it was the door being warped, the spring return being worn, or the rotary damper failing, so I ordered all to update the door mechanism. I also ordered a new micro switch since one of the switches had started to require more and more pressure to actuate. Figured I'd fix it at the same time.
Repair was very straightforward and the videos available on this and other repair sites were very helpful. I found a video that showed replacing the door mechanism on a nearly identical...

The old filter head was broken at the supply line side connector fell out. The clicking noise eventually caused the fridge to warm up and stop cooling. The clicking was the overload relay tripping. Genuine Ge part
By: Ge
Part Number: WR02X11768
The Ice Deflector Spring is an OEM replacement part for GE refrigerators. This spring is a crucial component of the ice dispensing system, specifically in selecting between crushed and whole ice cubes. It is designed to always force the diverter back in a way that the cubes get crushed. When whole cubes are selected, the solenoid pulls the lever against the spring’s tension to shift the configuration, allowing cubes to bypass the crusher blades.
Causes for a malfunctioning Ice Deflector Spring can include wear and tear from regular use, corrosion due to constant exposure to moisture, or mechanical failure that prevents it from effectively reverting the diverter to the crushed ice configuration.
Symptoms of a bad Ice Deflector Spring include:
- The ice dispenser only dispensing whole cubes, even when crushed ice is selected
- The diverter not returning to the crushed ice configuration
- Unusual sounds during the ice dispensing process
- The need for manual intervention to get crushed ice
This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Not dispensing ice, making loud noise Dennis V. • Parker , CO • March 24, 2020
When I took it apart I found that the drive cup was cracked, the helix lock plate hole was reamed out and the ice deflector spring was broken. The biggest problem was the helix had slipped down the shaft and allowed the end of the shaft to bore a hole in the housing which made it a bear to get out. Others have had the same problem. Once I got past that obstacle, it was simple to replace all the parts and it's working like normal again. Very helpful video explaining the repair.

Door would not self close wheel in top door closure assembly was worn flat Daniel B. • Carlsbad , CA • November 16, 2014
Downloaded the Technical Service Guide and followed the instructions for removal of the Door Closure Mechanism.
Items the instructions failed to mention:
1. Although they took the trouble to call for removal of a 3/16" Allen head bolt, they referred to the closure mounting bolts as just "bolts". In fact, they were T-25 bolts. If I didn't have a Torx kit, it would have required a trip to the Orange Big Box Home Center to complete the job.
2. Although the instructions don't describe this step,...

The recess door retainer secures the dispenser's ice chute flapper in the refrigerator door. Replacing a cracked or missing retainer restores proper flapper pivot and sealing to help reduce frost buildup and air leaks around the dispenser.
- Holds the recess/ice door on its pivot within the dispenser assembly
- Helps the flapper close fully to seal the ice chute
- Restores smooth open/close action of the dispenser door
- Common symptoms: loose or fallen flapper, poor chute seal, frost or condensation in the dispenser area, and ice clumping near the chute
What's included: 1 recess door retainer Install notes:
- Unplug the refrigerator before servicing the dispenser
- Carefully remove the dispenser bezel/control panel to access the ice chute door assembly
- Note spring orientation and retainer position; transfer components to the new retainer
- Verify flapper movement and seal before reassembly and restoring power

Yes ice was not coming out of the dispenser Jason S. • Goose Creek , SC • December 02, 2014
I replaced the solenoid, door, spring and bucket. The bucket cracked from ice freezing inside it. Ice froze inside the bucket because the solenoid stopped pulling the door closed which allowed hot humid air into the freezer. While I was in there I replaced the dispenser door, spring and crank because they are cheap and the old ones were moldy. The mold is most likely from the door not closing and causing condensation on the parts as well.
