The Pinion Gear is an OEM replacement part specific to KitchenAid stand mixers. It is a small gear located within the planetary mixing mechanism. The pinion gear works with the worm gear to power the planetary action that thoroughly mixes ingredients.

Causes of a bad pinion gear can include cracked, worn, or broken teeth from heavy use over time. Food debris or other obstructions around the gear can damage it as well.
This OEM KitchenAid replacement is compatible with additional stand mixer models from brands like Kenmore, some Whirlpool, and Maytag mixers.
Opened up transmission housing and removed all gearing to inspect for worn parts. The Professional 6 is all metal (except for the transmission housing cover) so just a couple of gears looked worn. Planetary needed adjustment, although the gearing was solid. Replaced the transmission housing cover with a new metal version. Cleaned out the old grease (all that grease...) and repacked the gears. The vertical shaft showed a slight bend so I replaced the bent shaft with a new shaft. I should have done that when I was replacing the gears. Although we have not mixed any more bread, I ran the mixer at a both low and high speeds for several minutes without any more gear clashing noises. It now purrs !
