This is a rubber gasket that seals the connection between the water fill tube and the ice maker assembly inside the freezer compartment. This thermostat regulates the internal temperature of the refrigerator by cycling the compressor on and off based on the temperature setting. If your refrigerator isn't staying at the right temperature or runs too warm, the thermistor may have failed. This sensor monitors compartment temps.
First I did the obvious: Changed the evaporator fan motor and condenser fan motor. Then I realized there was too little air flow from the freezer to the refrigerator, so I replaced the air baffle assembly. Now everything works again. This should have been a piece of cake, but in the 48" Kitchenaid side-by-side built-in, the baffle assembly is mounted on the side wall of the refrigerator rather than the back wall as the video showed. The problem was that the motor coupler & shaft had a tiny bit of rust at their union. With the weight of the ice bin it rusted in the lowest position. This didn't allow the motor coupler to float on the shaft. There is a spring inside the shaft that pushes up on the motor coupler keeping it engaged in the ice bin coupler above.
