Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You The spin cycle on my washing machine was not working due to a faulty door/lid switch   Joseph D. • Mechanicville , NY • February 17, 2015

I ordered a door/lid switch kit and an actuator and replaced them both. I probably didn't need the actuator, but it probably didn't hurt to replace it. The only issue I had was that the switch didn't seem to fit that well when installed on it's own, along with the actuator. So, I used the plastic shield which I had, along with the switch and actuator, as well as the old screws, as the screws that came with the kit were not long enough to accommodate the switch, actuator, and... Part Number: W10801656

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Washing machine starter knob had to be replaced   Anthony N. • Las Vegas , NV • August 11, 2014

The repair sounds easy, doesn't it? It would have been, except that I actually had to do laundry while waiting for the part to arrive. So, I was using a pair of channel locks to turn the exposed bolt/post sticking out in order to turn the washing machine on. In doing so, I actually crushed part of the thread on the bolt, so the starter knob wouldn't screw on! In order to screw on the new starter knob, I had to buy a special nut which rethreaded the bolt. It cost $25 for rethreading kit! Once... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Did not drain faulty pump   Angela T. • Madison , SD • September 08, 2014

I've never fixed a major appliance, so I was quite proud to be able to fix our washing machine. My husband likes to hire repairmen for such issues, but I like to avoid the cost if at all possible. First, I searched online for the cause of the washer not draining. Forums and youtube videos informed me that it was either a faulty pump or clogged hoses. After watching some DIY videos, I removed the front panel which revealed a fairly simple setup inside: a big tub, the motor, and a pump with two... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Leakage from tub seal   Gabriel S. • Petaluma , CA • March 15, 2015

I ordered the tub seal and stem seal kits along with the much needed spanner wrench. After viewing the video online several times and taking notes along the way I was ready to tackle the repair. After taking everything apart, I cleaned all areas thoroughly then addressed the rusty areas and mineral deposits found in the tub. Soaking the tub in vinegar and baking soda overnight helped loosen the built up deposits enough so I could carefully scrape them off with a spatula. This was very time... Read more

Brake Assembly
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WP6-2011900

The Brake Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This component plays a crucial role in stopping the washer drum from spinning at the end of the spin cycle. It ensures that the drum comes to a complete stop, allowing for safe unloading of laundry and preventing potential damage to the machine. Brake removal tool: TJ038315

Over time, the brake assembly can wear out or become damaged due to frequent use and the stresses of stopping a spinning drum. If the brake assembly fails, it can lead to issues with the washer’s spin cycle and overall performance.

Symptoms of a bad brake assembly include:

  • The drum not stopping quickly after the spin cycle
  • Loud noises or grinding sounds during or after the spin cycle
  • The washer shaking or vibrating excessively
  • Clothes remaining too wet after the spin cycle

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You After a process of elimination it turned out to be the brake assembly   Ken M. • Pierson , MI • September 13, 2016

I first replaced the two drive belts and the motor springs. That didn't fix it although they did need replacing. I then replaced the two bearings and the brake assy. The washer runs like new. If you replace the brake assembly, you should also replace the bearings. It will save a tear down later on. The Maytag repairman wanted $600.00 dollars to do the job. I did it for less than $200.00. Clamp Nut (Machine-Thread)
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WP6-2110472

This small clamping nut secures a mating clamp or bracket so the connected component stays firmly in place. Replacing a worn, stripped, or missing nut restores a solid hold and helps prevent looseness or leaks around the secured area.

  • Secures a clamp or bracket to its mounting point
  • Restores proper clamping force when the original nut is stripped or missing
  • Common signs: loose clamp, rattling/vibration, clamp won't tighten, minor leaks where the clamp is used
  • Durable hardware replacement to maintain stable, reliable assemblies
What's included: 1 clamping nut Install notes:
  • Disconnect power and shut off water/gas to the appliance before service
  • Note clamp/bracket orientation before removal for correct reassembly
  • Start threads by hand to prevent cross-threading; then tighten with the appropriate tool
  • Do not overtighten—snug just enough to securely clamp the component

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Maytag clothes washer always had a terrible smell   Steve S. • Scott Afb , IL • January 10, 2015

I took the wash basket out of the tub to remove all the sludge and scale that had accumulated over the years. But I did not have a spanner wrench to remove the large nut holding the basket to the center shaft. No problem - I used a hammer and chisel on the ears. But didn't realize it was a LEFT HAND THREAD!! That's when the nut split in two and I had no choice but to purchase another. Long story short, it's back together and the washer doesn't smell anymore. Live and learn... Read more
