The previous tenant in my daughter's new apartment apparently had a grease fire of sorts in the GE XL44 gas oven. Unplug range. Open oven door to gain access to the cook top lock-down screws, located under the front edge of the cook top. Tip the cook top up and carefully remove it by pulling forward. Took top apart to find out that the problem was just the lens for the light was broken. Come to find out that the lens is what holds the light in place.
