The upper counter-balance weight mount design is a poor design to begin with. It started to rattle loose approximately 5yrs into the 8yrs that we've owned it. Replaced the boot gasket with help from the online tutorial, took me about an hour but I considered that very reasonable. I think this project could be handled by just about anyone who is remotely handy. Read more

I checked three separate components, based on similar experiences of other friends. The water pump was ok and the stator look ok (no electrical burns, wiring was fine, etc.). After viewing a You Tube video of a washing machine making a similar noise as mine (metallic grinding sound when spinning), the video suggested the problem was a bad sensor.
