How to Troubleshoot & Replace Samsung AP4342351 / DC97-14486A Dryer Heating Element Assembly

My dryer had stopped heating. Question: Replace or repair. I am semi-handy working with tools. Over the years, I have tackled numerous repairs of mechanical, electrical, and automotive tasks. I did not want to spend the money for a service call and high dollar repair bill for an appliance repair company to come out, if it was something I could fix myself. I watched a couple of videos from AppliancePartsPros.com. They were very well done and easy to follow, plus they answered a number of questions I had about how to do the repair I was needing. I decided to give it a shot myself. The parts were reasonably priced and it was easy to figure out which ones were correct for my model dryer. The online ordering process was simple and for a small additional shipping charge, they guaranteed the parts would be delivered in 3 days. My parts arrived when they said they would. They were well packed and arrived safe and sound. Following the instructions from the videos, I was able to complete the repair in a couple of hours with no major issues of any kind. After installing all the parts and reassembling my dryer, I plugged it in and eureka the dryer was heating again. Purchased and installed new tub bearing and seals. Decided to replace the tub bolts as well, since I had it apart. Now if I could just find a new outer tub (which the manufacturer has discontinued). Appliance parts pros has a great "how to" video which made it simple! 

Our heating element had broken coils. Typed model number in to see which parts were likely to fix the problem. AppliancePartsPros told me exactly which parts to try. For the cost, it seemed the best decision was to order the complete Heating Element Assembly, rather than risk needing the two smaller parts as well. Decided to order new vent as well. We decided to whole heating element assembly.That fixed the issue. I won't have to guess which part of the assembly was bad. Repaired for under a hundred. Sure better than scrapping the dryer. The video showed exactly how to do the job. 

Copied the model number of Samsung Dryer, entered it into search field and up came a list of parts available. They didn't offer just the element so had to buy the whole assembly. Kinda glad I did, since it came with new thermistor and thermal fuse. Paid the extra $15 for two day shipping and Fedex had it here early. I watched the video on how to gain access and replace the element Assy. I do caution anyone doing this to label the wires and take a photo before disconnecting the old one. The new unit was a perfect fit and after a few minutes of cleanup and reassembly, my dryer is as good as new. 

Ordered a new heating element, and housing. I was Very apprehensive about taking apart the dryer as you video shows. But when I got going, and followed each step, I was able to disassemble everything, and hook up the wires to the new part, reinstall and got everything back where it started. Then I tried drying clothes. And it would not start, kept getting error, saying trying to dry clothes with the door open. I called your help desk, and they said I could have a bad door switch. I decided to take apart everything again, and hook back up. I found I did not reconnect an electrical link just above the door when it opened, once I reconnected it, and assembled everything again. When I started the dryer, it WORKED FINE!! Now my clothes are drying , like I had a new unit. My local repair man wanted $175.00 labor/service charge, plus parts of $100.00. That cost of almost $300.00 was more than 50% of buying a new dryer. When I cut out the repair labor, it was more realistic to do the repair myself. Man, am I glad I went that route. I just want to thank your company for showing those videos online, and taking the trouble of showing a novice how to make this repair myself. My hat is off to your company, and support staff. I would recommend your company to anyone who wants to save money, on appliance rpairs themselves, and do just as good a job as your local repair company. 

I looked on You Tube for help. AppliancePartsPros was by far the most helpful with easy to understand repair videos. It looked, to me, to be a faulty thermostat or fuse. The best part of the entire fix was the help I got when I called Appliance Pros. They too thought I was correct but suggested I get the entire heater assembly just in case. I asked if I could return any thing I didn't use and they said "sure". Using their You Tube video, it was easy to get to the heater assembly. I replaced it, assembled the dryer and I was back in business. I was curious about the old heater assembly and took it apart. Sure enough the heating coil was separated. Had I not gotten the good the advice I would have had to order it and my wife would have been very upset, as it is, she has been extra special to me after I fixed it. 

Replaced the heater element and the control board and replaced the drum belt and one of hte drum wheels that was making noise while I had the dryer apart. 

Checked all thermal fuses and replaced. - Still no good Replaced Main Board - Still no good Tested motor and did not get good ohm readings so replaced Motor unit - Still no good Checked voltage coming to back of dryer - one phase was 0 volts and the other was 220. Plug and outlet had arc'd and shorted. Replaced cord and outlet - All is good :)
