Kenmore / Sears Dryer Heating Element

After 22 years my Kenmore (Whirlpool) dryer stopped getting hot. So I went ahead and reviewed the videos and figured I could repair it myself. It should be noted that the only part that failed the Ohm test was the thermal fuse. I am not an electrician, just a housewife with limited funds and a desire to DIY. I used the provided videos for knowing how to replace everything except the heating element which I just guessed based on other reviews and seeing how the other parts worked. Watched video. Took dryer apart to get to heating element and sensors. In process found alot of lint had escaped into inner dryer and had a thick coating over heating element. I cleaned out most lint and pulled apart lint trap on front and cleaned out as much accumulated lint as possible. I then removed the heating element (very simple, three screws in a support bracket) and found it was broke in one spot.(wire - element severed). First ran the built-in diagnostic tests. Got error code indicating that the inlet thermistor was open. Removed lower access panel and did continuity checks on the inlet thermistor, thermal cutoff and heating element. Even doing these checks is very difficult on this model due to the location of these parts and the limited access through the so-called access panel. My 12 year old Frigidaire stack on top dryer had been beeping distress messages in some unintelligible code for about a year when it completely stopped producing heat. Since the dryer was 24 years old I opted to replace all the possible problem components, instead of just the bad one. The parts aren't that expensive and do to their age I figured it was worth it to avoid having to go back into the dryer in a few months. After reading several stories online about what to replace to fix the issue with my dryer not completely drying my clothes I decided to purchase a heating assembly, a sensor and a thermistor. I am not sure which one of these three pieces corrected the issue, but my dryer is back to drying my clothes as it should. The Youtube video's are priceless in helping to find and replace the parts. The dryer is a Kenmore Laundry Center, model 417-99570150. Bought in 1998, so it is an older model. Not wanting to buy the newer ones that are out now. We opted to fix the Kenmore. I replaced the heating element supplied by AppliancePartsPros.com. It took me longer than the estimated 30 minutes to an hour cited in the good instructional video. A few things took more time than I had expected: 1. Removing the top of the dryer unit resulted in my breaking off the three plastic tabs that is used to anchor the top to the structure below. My appliance repair guy checked out the problem, but the stack washer dryer required the contractor to dismantle the cabinet to allow the repair to occur.
