This rocker switch is the on/off control used in the appliance's control panel. It opens and closes the circuit to a selected feature, restoring dependable operation when the original switch becomes worn, stuck, or fails.
Take the cover off back. Pull two-wire plugs off back of switch (remember how they go back on). Pop switch out from back through the front with a screwdriver from underneath switch by pushing up on the retainer clip. This is a gas valve that controls the flow of gas to an individual surface burner on a gas range cooktop. Turning the corresponding knob opens or closes this valve to regulate flame size. Replace this valve if the burner will not ignite, the flame is uneven or cannot be adjusted, or if you detect a gas smell around the burner area.
