David for Model Number Thermador SGCV36G

The front right burner of my Thermador cooktop intermittently continues to spark even after the burner has successfully ignited. This sparking continues for 10 to 30 seconds and then stops. Once the repeated ignitor sparking has ceased, if I turn off the burner and immediately turn it back on again the problem does not recur, but if I let the burner cool down for a couple of hours and turn it on again the problem is again present. Spraying a small amount of electrical contact cleaner on the ignition plug often cures the problem for a day or so, but then the problem comes back. I had my spark module replaced a couple of years ago, but this hasn't solved the problem. Faulty ignition head? Is BSH-00189324 the correct part to order?

1 Answer

David, it would be recommended that the burner head is thoroughly cleaned. Food residues can accumulate and increase the resistance, preventing a proper spark which can cause the ignitor to either not spark or spark continuously until enough of the resistance has weakened.

Larry, You would need to do a continuity check on the wire from the spark module to the ignitor. If all good make sure it is free from debris, then it would likely be the module.

Chuck, It would be recommended to pull the burner cap and head and make sure that they are clean. A dirty burner will cause this type of issue.

Bobby, this could be caused by a damp or partially clogged burner head, the burner head may need to be checked to ensure it is properly set, a loose ground wire on the spark module, or a spark module that could be starting to fail. It would be recommended that the burner head is cleaned thoroughly and then tested to see if this continues. If it does, the next step would be to check the ground wire of the spark module to ensure that it is properly grounded. If this checks good, then the spark module 00635046 would be the issue.

Sgcs365rs Owner for Model Number SGCS365RS

I need to replace the potentiometer on my Extralow burner. I noticed the wire connector to the ignition plug was damaged I assumed during installation 19 years ago. While replacing the potentiometer, I want to replace the connector to the ignition plug that is badly bent. I know it is a blade type connector but do not know its size. If someone can tell me the size of the connector then I can complete the repair at the same time I am replacing the potentiometer. The Thermador manuals does not give a partnumber for the wire/connector. Thanks.

SGCS365RS Owner, unfortunately, as the manufacturer does not list the wiring for the spark ignitor, the terminal size is not available.

Larry, once the retaining clip has been removed from the ignitor and the ignitor has been pulled through, the spring should slide off of the ignitor unless it has seized on from any residues. An old toothbrush and a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water can be used to clean any residues off that might be causing it to seize.

Ernie for Model Number NGT935 UC/01

So, over the past 6-8 months, the burners would click from time to time when the stove was not in use. Recently, over the last week, the stove is clicking pretty constant and not stopping while the stove is not in use. I have cleaned the entire cooktop when I disassembled it, and I have let everything dry. I also ordered and replaced the spark module from you guys. I reassembled it and it still continues to spark. It's all the burners sparking, and I would say that it clicks 20 or so times per minute. What else can I change? I already $150 into the repair. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Ernie, based on the information provided, one or more of the spark switches 00189008 has a closed contact when it should have an open contact. To diagnose which one failed, the unit will need to be unplugged, the switches accessed, then remove the wires from one switch and test for continuity from terminal to terminal. This will need to be done to each switch at a time while plugging the wires back in when done testing. If any of the switches tested as having continuity when in the off position, the switch would need to be replaced.

Paula, often times the burner head will have a residue build up that can cause the ignitor to not spark. The first step would be to clear the burner head of any possible chance of residue. From there, the ignitor can be tested for continuity by disconnecting power to the unit, accessing the inside of the cooktop and testing the ignitor from the tip of the ignitor to the end of its wiring harness for continuity. If there is not continuity, then you will want to test the ignitor and wire separately to identify which one failed. If the wiring and ignitor check good, and the other ignitors will come on but not the front left, then the issue would be with the ignition device [00636439].
