The Temperature Sensor is an OEM replacement part for GE refrigerators, designed to accurately monitor and relay the temperature inside the refrigerator and freezer compartments to the electronic control board. By detecting the slightest changes in internal temperature, the sensor allows the control board to make real-time adjustments to the cooling system, activating the compressor and fans as needed to maintain optimal conditions for food preservation.

Over time, the temperature sensor can fail due to electrical issues, exposure to moisture, or general wear and tear. A malfunctioning sensor can lead to improper temperature regulation, affecting the efficiency of the refrigerator and the freshness of stored food.

Symptoms of a bad Temperature Sensor include:

  • The refrigerator or freezer not maintaining the set temperature
  • The appliance running continuously or more frequently than normal
  • Inaccurate temperature readings displayed

This OEM GE part can also be used on Hotpoint, RCA, and Kenmore/Sears appliances.

Kimberly, The sensor replacements are the same part number for the one in the fresh food section and the one in the freezer section. it would be recommended that you check them with a multimeter prior to replacing them to determine if they are bad or if it is something else causing the issue.

Raul, the fifth thermistor would be for the custom cool section when applicable. However, it would be recommended that the evaporator is inspected for a proper frost pattern and inspecting for proper airflow as it would be more likely that one of these things are going to be a cause.

Debbie, it would be recommended that the freezer thermistor WR55X10025 and the refrigerator thermistor WR55X10025 are tested for resistance as they can cause this issue. At 77°F they should measure 5kO, at 59°F they should read 7.8kO, at 41°F they should read 12.7kO, and at 23°F they should measure 21kO. If they test good, the next step would be to test the defrost heater WR51X10055 as it should measure 18O. If these items test good, the failure would be in the main control WR55X10956.

Rod, it would be recommended that the vents going from the fan to the door vent, as well as the return vent are inspected for any blockages. When the ice maker is on, the fan should turn on and off based on the timing set within the main control. It would also be recommended that the freezer and refrigerator temperatures are verified using a thermometer as either of these being off too much can cause the fan to only operate at 50% of normal.
